Ritter Medical pledges help for PCR labs on COVID-19 front line

Around the world, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has stretched reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) laboratory capacity to its limits in the search for vaccines and in the battle to ramp up testing capacity to identify those who are positive for the virus and those who have developed antibodies.

Extraction for PCR Diagnostic Panels

Ritter Medical has two particularly valuable contribution to make to the fight against COVID-19, in  helping laboratories ramp up diagnostic and testing capacity, drawing on its expertise and capabilities in designing  robotic plates to perform thousands of microplate-based assays and genomics methods for researchers worldwide, including PCR preparation assays as used in COVID-19 testing.

The first is in extraction from patient samples of the Ribonuclease (RNase) that catalyzes the degradation of RNA into smaller components. This is the first step in analyzing samples and depends on the use of magnetic plates for separation.

Ritter is ramping up production of its Riplate® magnetic Microwell and Deep well plates that are optimised for this application, to ensure only the RNase goes into the reverse transcriptase RT-PCR process.

Mass batch RT-PCR testing

The second contribution is in supplies for RT-PCR carried out on unprecedented scales worldwide, which depend on robotic tips and the Riplate® series of well plate optimised for PCR, particularly Riplate® 96 well plates for ELISA analysis and Riplate® 384 that allow larger batch testing for micro samples, with alphanumeric identification of individual samples.
