As a free radical and signalling molecule, Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in vasodilation, immune system function, apoptosis and many other physiological and pathological processes. Nitric oxide is generated either via the oxidation of L-arginine by NO synthases (NOSs) or the reduction of dietary Nitrite (NO₂) and Nitrate (NO₃) by various metal-containing proteins.

Nitric oxide is an unstable molecule that quickly degrades, which makes it challenging for direct detection methods. However, ZELLX® has now developed an assay kit that exploits NO₂ and NO₃ characteristics as the stable metabolites of NO oxidation, allowing their concentrations to be conveniently measured via colorimetric methods and reported as the total NO content in biological samples.

The ZELLX® Nitric Oxide Assay Kit measures Nitrite (NO₂), Nitrate (NO₃) and Nitric Oxide (NO) in a variety of samples with accurate quantification achieved using the standard curve method, achieving standard reference quality, which is the most critical part for any bioassay.

The assay uses the Standard calibrated to The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
