Brevetti Angela’s groundbreaking SYFPAC® DUO™ BFS platform impresses visitors at CPHI Milan

Vicenza, Italy: – Visitors to the Brevetti Angela stand at the recent 2024 CPHI Worldwide Pharma Expo in Milan were highly impressed by the Blow-Fill-Seal (BFS) advances that this leading manufacturer of pharma packaging machinery has incorporated into its latest SYFPAC^® DUO™ BFS platform.

This was not a full unveiling of DUO™, which could only be half-glimpsed working behind a clean-room type enclosure on stand Booth 18D41, as part of the Pharma Machinery (P-MEC) zone at the Fiera Milano.

Nevertheless, any visitor familiar with BFS technology was able to appreciate that the advances incorporated in DUO™ represented several major steps forward for Blow Fill Seal pharma packaging.

Easy scale-up on compact footprint

These include radical reduction of required clean room space to under 6m², inherent upgrading for up to ten-fold faster production within the same footprint, reduced plastic consumption, and lower waste.

Perhaps most exciting of all is the DUO™ blending of closed parison technology for aseptic isolation with the greater flexibility of insertion that was previously reserved for shuttle systems. When associated with the capability for ‘cool BFS’ cold production, this revolutionizes the ability of BFS to handle small parenteral production of prefilled syringes, vaccines, and other temperature-sensitive products.

Strong team

This was Brevetti Angela’s sixth successive appearance at CPHI Worldwide. It also used its stand to display its wide range of advanced pharma large and small-volume parenteral packaging formats, including the revolutionary prefilled syringes and injection devices developed by sister company 3CK.

CPHI Worldwide 2024 was very much a ‘home fixture’ for Brevetti Angela, staged just a few kilometers from its Milan base at Vicenza. The company’s strong event team, also representing 3CK and its sales agent, was led by its Sales and R&D Director, Eng. Rajeev Kabbur and included his son, Ajay, as a Sales and Technical Specialist, along with several members of the founding Consolaro family. Over three generations, the distinctive family nature of Brevetti Angela has resulted in a company dedicated to its core mission of advancing the technology of BFS packaging.

Solving industry problems

After the show, Rajeev Kabbur commented: “DUO addresses a lot of chronic problems experienced in aseptic pharma packaging. For those still using conventional filling techniques, there is a constant pressure to free up storage space, increase output, and reduce need for complicated in-line machinery, sterilization areas and large clean room spaces. For those already producing on BFS, the main issue has been that adding inserts was possible only on closed parison machines at the expense of slower production. And plastic scrap has always been a major cost issue.”

“Brevetti Angela has more than 45 years’ experience and our BFS machines are used all around the world, customized to every customer’s needs. We listened to customer needs and tried to see if we could provide a better machine, based not just on what we do, but also our competitors’ current offers. We have always produced shuttle machines that work on the open parison concept but are aware of the advantages of the closed parison – so we took the best of both worlds and imagined, designed, and developed this new system,” Rajeev explained.

Advancing BFS technology

“CPHI Worldwide attracts one of the pharma industry’s largest and most influential audiences, so we took the opportunity to discuss DUO’s features and capabilities with several companies who are experts on BFS production, and they were impressed. All of them confirmed that the advances we’ve achieved are huge steps for pharma manufacturing,” he added.

“BFS is already the safest filling technique, as it reduces the number of steps in the filling process and it happens under grade A isolation, making it fully compliant with EU GMP Annex 1, for instance. It is also the most cost-efficient, as it only needs plastic granules, product, and a very limited space, while granting a high output of many thousands of units per hour. With DUO™, the BFS process gets better still,” Rajeev Kabbur concluded.
