Bachem MCSGP continuous chromatography shortlisted for Swiss Technology Award

Bubendorf, Switzerland: – Bachem, the leading CDMO has been short-listed as a finalist in the Innovation Category of the 2024 STA Swiss Technology Awards.

Bachem’s place in the final round of three Innovator companies recognizes its leading-edge advances in continuous chromatography, through the development of MCSGP (Multi-Column Countercurrent Solvent Gradient Purification with its major environmental implications.

    Environmental impact

The groundbreaking Bachem MCSGP technology addresses one of the most pressing challenges facing the biopharma industry: the need to generate sustainable, large-scale production of peptide APIs while minimizing environmental impact.

Increasing pharmaceutical demand for peptide API active ingredients means current batch sizes have reached hundreds of kilograms. However, producing on this scale while adhering to green manufacturing practices presents a significant challenge, particularly given the vast quantities of chemicals and solvents used, especially in the purification process. For instance, up to 16,000 kg of solvents (mainly water) may be required to manufacture just 1 kg of API for peptide-based anti-obesity drugs.

Bachem’s innovative MCSGP technology offers a more sustainable way forward by:

    • Minimizing the environmental footprint associated with large-scale purification processes, especially solvent consumption and waste generation
    • Increasing throughput and productivity, accelerating the manufacturing timeline
    • Improving process efficiency to reach target yield and purity levels with greener solvents.

    Final case

By incorporating MCSGP into its downstream processing, Bachem has made significant strides in improving the efficiency of large-scale chromatography, reducing solvent use, and cutting down on waste, all while enhancing overall sustainability. The use of MCSGP and other optimizations has reduced Process Mass Index (PMI) by up to 71% for certain products.

This innovation has positioned Bachem at the forefront of industry transformation and it is this is case for the 2024 STA award that it will present at the Open-i 2024 conference, where all nine finalists in the three STA categories, also including Inventors and Start-ups, make their final submissions before a high-profile audience.
