Bubendorf, Switzerland: – Leading CDMO Bachem will host a series of online webinars exploring the benefits of using illustrating high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) to characterize oligonucleotides.

The webinar ‘High-resolution mass spectrometry of oligonucleotides  – characterization made easy’ will first be hosted on the Zoom platform on Thursday, Dec 8, 2022,starting 1630 UTC and lasting around one hour, repeated four days later on Monday, December 12, commencing 0800 UTC to meet the needs of Asian partners. Both webinars are free to register and registration can be completed online (see Resources).

    Characterization down to single strand

The session will present direct, robust and easy-to-use techniques that can fully characterize the nucleotide sequence of highly modified single-stranded RNA, using top down tandem MS.

Discussion will include a case study for a N-acetylgalactosamine modified RNA sense strand, showing how the high-res MS approach can be applied on a single strand level, as well as on siRNA duplex level in a single electrospray ionization MS (ESI-MS) experiment. This procedure also allows Bachem us to reliably predict the structure of impurities that can occur during oligonucleotide production, thus supporting process improvements in manufacturing.

    Expert hosts

The webinar principle speaker will be Dr. Giovanni Calderisi, Project Chemist QC at Bachem AG, who is an expert in mass spectrometry of oligonucleotides. In his current position as a project chemist he is responsible for establishing routine workflows for characterization of oligonucleotides and peptides by ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry. Dr. Calderisi holds a Ph.D. in chemistry with focus on biomolecular mass spectrometry at the University of Innsbruck, Austria.

The December 8 session will also be hosted by Bachem Senior Business Development Manager Seamus White, based in Northern Ireland and acting as primary contact for Bachem partners in the UK and Ireland in the area of GMP peptide API manufacture and development. In this role, he supports customers through all phases of their project – from preclinical research and IND enabling toxicology studies to process validation and commercialization.

For the December 12 webinar, co-host will be Dr. Naoki Yamamoto, Head of Business Development & Sales, Asia Pacific at Bachem Japan, who for the past 16 years has been involved in the development of new synthetic methodologies for glycopeptides and glycoproteins, purification & analytical technologies for those materials, coordinating several collaborations and alliances with domestic and international pharma companies.
