Presenting insights on lactose polymorphs at European Pharmaceutics conference

    news-releasesMEGGLE Excipients
    March 13th 2025

Wasserburg, Germany: – Pharmaceutical excipient industry leader MEGGLE will be a prominent presence at the upcoming 5th European Conference on Pharmaceutics in Porto, Portugal.

MEGGLE will be a scientific contributor to the conference, with a poster presentation of its investigations into the stability of lactose polymorphs.

    Research services

It will also be an exhibitor at the associated ResearchPharm® R&D exhibition, with a stand at Booth 43 at the Alfândega do Porto congress center, showcasing its very wide range of lactose-based excipients, highly tailored to specific applications. The stand displays will also highlight MEGGLE contract manufacturing and research services, such as spray drying, co-processing, agglomeration, and product customization.

The MEGGLE event team will include Project Manager for R&D Dr. Karin Hellauer, Application Manager Dr. Rebekka Spellerberg, and Area Manager Julia Cornelissen.

    Investigating polymorphs

Dr. Hellauer is also lead author of the study ‘Thermal Analysis of Lactose Polymorphs’ that will be presented at the conference. She conducted the study in partnership with MEGGLE colleague Ricarda Leister, along with Claire Strasser and Dr. Ligia de Souza from the Application Laboratory/Life Sciences Division of Selb-based NETZSCH Gerätebau GmbH.

Their research investigated lactose polymorphs (α-Lactose Monohydrate, α-Lactose Anhydrous stable, α-Lactose Anhydrous unstable, β-Lactose Anhydrous and amorphous lactose) and the stability of distinct polymorphic forms under different conditions as a function of temperature and relative humidity.

The researchers used a variety of sophisticated analytical techniques such as Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), to characterize amorphous content and elucidate characteristics of the various spray-dried, micronized, crystalline and anhydrous MEGGLE lactose grades.

Dr. Hellauer will highlight some interesting results and show why polymorphic characteristics and their relationships with different processing methods is an area that deserves further investigation.

About European Conference on Pharmaceutics 2025

First staged in 2018, the biennial European Conference on Pharmaceutics brings together scientists from industry, academia and regulatory bodies worldwide to discuss research and development of drug products and medical devices, scale-up and pharmaceutical production.

The 5th European Conference is a two-day event opening March 24 at the Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre, in northern Portugal.

The conference theme “Innovative dosage forms and advanced technologies for modern therapeutics” will cover a wide range of topics including innovation in oral drug development, innovations in bioavailability, process development, biopharma manufacturing, and many others.

The associated ResearchPharm® exhibition will feature displays from leading forces in R&D, including providers of small-scale and laboratory equipment, analytical instruments, advanced ingredients and excipients, contract research, and lab services.

The European Conferences on Pharmaceutics are jointly organized by Germany’s APV International Association for Pharmaceutical Technology), the French APGI International Society of Drug Delivery Sciences and Technology and Italy’s A.D.R.I.T.E.L.F Association of Italian Professors and Researchers of Pharmaceutical Technologies and Legislation Department of Pharmacy.
