L.B. Bohle White Paper: Continuous Dry Granulation
L.B. Bohle Maschinen und Verfahren GmbH (L.B. Bohle) has released a technical White Paper on the use of its BRC 25 and BRC 100 dry granulator series compactors for continuous dry granulation.
The BRC series dry granulators feature electromechanical roller drive and massive roller shafts with moveable gap along with integrated PID loop control that assures minimized gap deviations during the whole production time with minimal time needed to achieve a steady state during process startup.
The paper is based on an internal study in which a BRC roller compactor is paired with the L.B. Bohle Turbo Sieve 200 conical sieve to integrate the granulation step, transforming ribbons into final granules even at high material throughputs. The study aimed to demonstrate the functionality of this sophisticated set up for continuous production in dry granulation.
Compaction force and gap width
The paper discusses materials and methods (choice of excipients, premixing, sampling, etc.) with the main discussion focused on impact of compaction force and gap width on final particle size distribution (PSD). It identifies a close correlation between higher compaction force and larger granule particle size and also investigates the influence of gap width on both particle size and material throughput.
The paper also covers the important role of sieve screen size and rotary speed in determining final PSD.
The study concludes that the new BRC 100 roller compactor is highly functional in producing a precise representative placebo granule formulation with negligible material waste during the process start-up, particularly when partnered with a suitable sieve setup.
