How to Choose the Right Pharmaceutical Freeze Dryer
How much does a pharmaceutical freeze dryer cost?
Each HOF pharma freeze dryer is unique, being individually engineered and manufactured to the end user’s application and purpose. Therefore, their prices vary significantly based on size, automation level, refrigeration technology and features specified by customer.
HOF offers systems ranging from laboratory units for R&D purposes with a shelf surface area of 0.22 m2 to 2.5 m2 up to production systems with a shelf surface area of up to 50 m2 for vial application and 75 m2 for bulk application. An initial overview on the price level of a Freeze-Dryer can be given based on the product and customer specific requirements.
What should I look for when buying a freeze dryer for pharmaceuticals?
Lyophilization is a mission-critical process where product quality and patient safety leave no room for compromise. Choosing the right system means ensuring exceptional precision in temperature and pressure control, so even the most sensitive products are dried without any loss of potency. Equally important is the ability to generate reliable, GMP-compliant process data with complete confidence. Beyond performance, customers demand robust validation support, production capacity that grows with their needs, and energy-efficient refrigeration systems that meet today’s sustainability standards. HOF meets these demands with tailor-made solutions, comprehensive qualification documentation, and 24/7 service support—delivering reliability, performance, and peace of mind across the entire lifecycle of your system.
What’s the difference between laboratory and production freeze dryers?
Laboratory freeze dryers are designed for research purposes and for product and process development with smaller batch sizes and flexible operation. Therefore a high demand for the usage of process analytical tools (PAT tools) is considered at laboratory systems.
Production systems offer larger capacity, automated loading/unloading, and extra-robust construction for reliable manufacturing processes. HOF ensures with its design of the systems an easy and simplified scale-up process from laboratory scale to production scale.
Which refrigeration system is best for pharmaceutical freeze drying?
The choice of the correct refrigeration system for pharmaceutical freeze-drying processes is depending on the installation site and the available utilities, the available footprint in the technical area and site-specific safety requirements that have to be considered. Besides this the regulatory requirements (e.g. F-Gases Regulation or PFAS restrictions) are nowadays limiting available technologies. Therefore the usage of synthetic refrigeration systems is more and more reduced and restricted. Here HOF is able to offer the following alternative refrigeration technologies:
- Liquid Nitrogen as refrigerant
- Refrigeration system based on natural refrigerants (HOF CAR6)
- Refrigeration system based on air as refrigerant (HOF CryoBlizzard Technology)
All systems are in-line with the regulatory requirements on the European market, have been proven in the industry and allow for a long-term reliable production in the pharmaceutical industry.
What automation options are available for the loading and unloading of freeze dryers?
HOF offers manual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic loading and unloading systems. These can provide, for example, fully automated vial transport from the filling machine to the Freeze-Dryer, robotic filling lances or suction devices, or loading of magazines.
Further, besides the classical conveyer-based loading and unloading system, the advanced HOF SIRIUS robotic system transports vials without glass-to-glass contact is available for reliable loading and unloading of Freeze-Drying systems.
All systems can be integrated into RABS and isolator technology for sterile processing environments.
Can existing freeze dryers be upgraded or retrofitted?
Yes, legacy freeze dryers can be retrofitted with innovative loading and unloading systems from HOF to meet future requirements. HOF also retrofits refrigeration systems and can upgrade control systems to current technology, extending equipment lifespan and improving performance.
What makes HOF freeze dryers different from competitors?
HOF freeze-drying systems are individually and precisely tailored to each application and to the specific production requirements of our customers. Key differentiators include patented technologies such as SynchroFreeze® controlled nucleation, CryoBlizzard® air-based refrigeration, comprehensive lifecycle support, and dedicated custom engineering for every project. Beyond technology, HOF is committed to building long-term partnerships with its customers to ensure reliable, responsive, and sustainable support throughout the entire lifecycle of the equipment.
