Luqa, Malta: – Innovative life sciences environment specialist Evolve Ltd (Evolve) is investing in Augmented Reality (AR) to boost the capability of its engineers and consultants to get direct real time feedback from clients and extend its abilities to provide remote technical assistance.

Evolve’s Technical Service and Projects Department Manager Ritianne Schembri says the AR investment, scheduled to come on stream within the next few months, is one of the most exciting developments for her team.

“This will mostly help our engineers get direct, real-time feedback from our peers, and in turn for our experts to help our partners in remote parts of the world for our International projects,” Ms. Schembri told Malta CEOs magazine in a feature about leadership at Evolve.

COVID challenges

The AR investment is particularly relevant in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has hugely increased demand for Evolve’s services while simultaneously posing huge challenges for Evolve’s Service Department.

Ritianne oversees an eight-strong group of Evolve field service engineers who provide their customers with hands-on support. Evolve technicians are also front-liners, providing 24/7 support to hospitals and other clients on various medical equipment.

“Our job is to visit and service equipment at the customer site, so unfortunately, the option to work remotely has been limited. Our customers did not stop, and we had to be there with them giving them our full support,” says Ritianne,.

“As a leader, I ensure that the whole team is well aware of the protective measures they need to take in their everyday jobs, ” Ms. Schembri explains

“Regular internal and external communication, including with leading virologists, helped to keep us going and informed. Teamwork kept us strong and we all did what was necessary in order to ensure that our mission of contributing to improving the wellbeing of humanity is maintained, even during this difficult period,” says Ritianne.

African laboratory

She also singles out as a highlight of her career with Evolve a visit last year to Ghana, where the company plans to install an oncology lab at one of the company’s potential customers that will be one of the first GxP compliant facilities in Africa.

“Decision making comes with a lot of responsibility, especially since we are catering for the aftersales service of equipment that can save lives, or in one way or another, affect the life of a person,” she reflects.

Medical cannabis growth

Ms. Schembri has also played a key role in managing increasing numbers of Evolve  turnkey projects related to the medical cannabis sector, where Malta is becoming a center of excellence.

“This entails managing the process from the very first design draft, all the way to the official opening of the facility. It is a great satisfaction to see a development go from zero to completion, while making it the right place for the industrial investor,” says Ritianne.
