CurTec: Quality in production of Pharmaceutical packaging

The high quality of CurTec packaging is partly a function of design and materials but also of internal organization, process and production.

Recent investments in new production machinery and improved processes are yielding new efficiencies and reductions in cost, energy use and environmental impact that enhance overall product quality.

Lower energy, higher sustainability

CurTec has accelerated its progress in reducing energy consumption over recent years, with a wholesale replacement of its blow molding machines from 2012, substituting four energy guzzling injection molding machines with three advanced and more energy-efficient Arburg models, along with a new hybrid blow molding machine.

The latter came on stream from early 2013, providing considerable reductions in energy consumption and emissions. As a bonus, the new machine can be configured very accurately producing even higher production quality, with fewer rejects and reduced waste.

Better energy management and a more stable process

At the same time, the new Arburg injection molding machines, fitted with the latest technology and six-axis handling robots, allow products to pass more smoothly through the CurTec production plant.

All the machines are fitted with frequency regulated pumps and energy efficient regulator valves that not only drastically reduce energy consumption but also increase process stability and efficiency.

Process optimization

Alongside latest technology, CurTec has also invested in further optimizing its processes and quality systems, reorganizing processes and quality control with greater focus on customer priorities and elimination of reject products.

Current plans focus on integration separation of the cooling-water system, removing the separation between molds and machinery to reduce overall loss of energy.

For CurTec, building efficiency and reduced energy consumption into process is all part of the primary strategy of maximized packaging quality ensuring long term sustainability that feed through into the customer’s own performance.

FSC 22000 Certification

One testimonial of CurTec’s success in building quality into process has been seen with the recent award of FSSC 22000 Food Safety Management certification for organizations that process or manufacture food packaging materials to the highest standards of hygiene and safety, at least equivalent to pharmaceutical standards.

FSSC 22000 is fully recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and is based on existing ISO 22000 standards, along with TS22002-4 technical specifications for packaging materials.

In order to comply, CurTec had to demonstrate highest standards in key areas, including:

  • Zoning/ Zone classification
  • Hygiene measures: hair nets, protective clothing and disinfection at production entry
  • Hygiene training for the entire staff
  • Modified work permits as result of new hygiene policy
  • Access control to corporate grounds and premises
  • Extensive risk assessments
