Burago di Molgora, Italy: – Analytical enzymes world leader CPC Biotech Srl has been allocated funding by the Lombardy Government for its part in the BRAVE research consortium focused on development of innovative biocatalysts.

The funding is the result of a successful proposal to Regione Lombardia’s Collabora e Innova initiative to promote collaborative research and development project between regional companies and research organizations.

Advanced biocatalytics

Regione Lombardia has set aside 850,000 euros from its European Regional Development Fund to support the CPC Biotech work, more than half its estimated 1.4m euro cost. In total the BRAVE project has now attracted public funding of €3.5 million towards a total budget of €7.9m.

BRAVE (Biocatalytic Reactions for Added ValuE) is exploring biocatalyst applications in therapeutics and diagnostics. It involves CPC Biotech Srl as part of a consortium of companies and public research that includes Clever Bioscience Srl, ACS Dobfar Srl, MEG Srl, University of Pavia and Italy’s National Research Council.

Industrial HVAC targets

Together, they will focus on the development of biocatalysts useful in production of high value-added compounds (HVACs). These have become important industrial targets as essential compounds for pharmaceutical and industrial applications, notably in the fields of diagnostics and drug safety.

Resource challenges and ecological issues demand more sustainable production methods, with biocatalysts offering a promising approach is allowing microbial bioproduction of HVACs by regio- and stereo-selective reaction under mild conditions.

Sustainability goals

The use of biocatalyst enzymes can enable more sustainable production processes, compatible with European standards, also encouraging the reshoring of production, particularly for APIs, whole reducing, consumption, waste, and costs, opening up new market opportunities and contributing to a more sustainable industrial future.

CPC Biotech CEO Fabio Arenghi commented:

“Securing this funding will allow CPC Biotech to strongly accelerate the entry into the market of new cutting-edge biocatalysts and will contribute to firmly keep CPC Biotech’s reputation as a market leader in the sector of diagnostics and analytical enzymes.”

About CPC Biotech

Founded in 2006, CPC Biotech srl has rapidly established a reputation as a leading producer and contract manufacturing organization that develops and supplies of enzymes for Quality Control (QC) for the pharma and biotech industries as well as ready-to-use media for microbiology.

The company has become an internationally respected center of expertise in the specialized field of antibiotics inactivation and acts as a consultant to several world-leading pharma companies. It produces a range of enzymes able to inactivate antibiotics that are used in micro-QC analysis for sterility testing and total count on antibiotics as well as in environmental monitoring of clean rooms.

CPC Biotech was a pioneer in developing highly stable, broad-spectrum beta-lactamases and has uniquely developed an enzyme for inactivation of macrolide and aminoglycoside antibiotics. It is also distinctive in offering heparinases for QC testing of low molecular heparins like enoxaparin.

CPC Biotech offers a range of products and services grouped into two fields: enzymes for pharmaceutical and industrial use, and biotech enzymes for pharmaceutical QC, including Lactamator™ for inactivating penicillins, Cephalosporins and Penems, Macroduster™ for macrolides inactivation, Carbamator™ for hydrolyzation and degradation of carbapenems, penicillins and cephalosporins and Aminosniper™ for inactivation of aminoglycoside antibiotics.
