Overview

Exosome depleted serum is treated with Biowest’s proprietary ultrafiltration method to deplete the microvesicles naturally present in the serum. The depletion rate is measured by high precision nanoparticle tracking analysis apparatus (NTA) to ensure treatment has no impact on cell morphology or cell growth.

Biowest can thus offer researchers the best approach to ‘Leave nothing to chance’ in reducing time, effort and variability in experiments with fetal bovine sera.

Background

Exosomes are extracellular vesicles released from the cells by the plasma membrane. The Biological significance of these structures is the most important issue in exosome research. Fetal Bovine Serum is commonly used to supplement cell culture medium and it naturally possesses exosomes. The exact biological functions of these microvesicles are yet unknown but they can interfere with the exosomes derived from the cultured cells. Currently researchers use time consuming and less effective alternatives to deplete the exosomes from the serum.

Features & Applications

Biowest treats its Exosome depleted FBS serum with its proprietary ultrafiltration method, which depletes the microvesicles naturally present in the serum. The depletion rate is measured by a nanoparticle tracking analysis apparatus (NTA using the NanoSight NS300 apparatus from Malvern).

The resulting product possesses the following features:

  • Original animal serum depletion system
  • ≥ 95 % depletion of exosome (guaranteed minimum)
  • No modification on the cell growth promotion
  • No significant variation in physico-chemical analyzes

Benefits

Biowest Exosome depleted Fetal bovine Serum provides an ideal solution for exosome and cell communication research, delivering a clear set of user benefits.

  • Retains original animal serum core properties
  • No significant variation in physico-chemical analyzes
  • No modification on the cell growth promotion
  • Efficiency of treatment on FBS is independent of batches
  • Exosome depletion has no impact on cells morphology
  • Depletion treatment does not impact cell growth

About Biowest

Biowest SAS (Biowest) is the European leader in the collection and processing of animal sera and cell culture media, offering the widest range of sera and media available on the market. Biowest controls the production of the sera throughout the entire process, from collections around the world to final shipment of bottled serum from its warehouse.

Biowest offers standard cell culture media as well as custom-made formulations for specific applications, using its outstanding knowledge of cell culture products.

Biowest can also offer highest quality and premium service, ability to address special requirements and full traceability and security guaranteed by vertical integration.

Founded in 1987, Biowest has since 2004 been a member of the Viking/Serascandia group, collectors of animal by-products in Latin America; thus becoming the first serum company vertically integrated from raw material to finished product.
