Berlin, Germany: – The Berlin subsidiary of Swiss-based medical assembly process specialist Mikron Automation is taking part in an innovative non-profit project to realize mobile automation equipment for the production of protection masks in response to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The compact mobile mask production stations are designed to be set up at hospitals and other healthcare facilities to allow them to produce their own masks on site.

CV-19 protection mask challenge

Protection masks play an important role in combating the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus, particularly in ensuring that those infected do not pass on the virus. The result has been a global shortage of masks.

Mikron Berlin GmbH has responded to the challenge by participating in a pioneering non-profit project to produce protection masks. Within a very short space of time, Mikron specialists in Berlin, together with project partners, have developed a suitable system that can produce 50 masks per minute.

Carola mini factory project

At the core of the solution is an assembly system that is so small and mobile that it can easily be shipped worldwide to recipients, including hospitals, other health care facilities, community and civic centers, to set up their own protection mask ‘mini factories’ in as little as three weeks from order.

The base of this initiative is the non-profit project Carola – an idea driven by volunteers from a variety of disciplines (physics, engineering, economics, etc). The open source approach gives engineers all over the world access to the know-how needed to produce such systems and has invited them to work together to further develop and advance the technology.
