KORSCH – Adding value to tableting through innovation
Berlin, Germany: – The latest technology bulletin from tablet press leader KORSCH AG highlights the valuable work of its INNOVATION CENTER in Berlin.
The article ‘More Than an Equipment Specialist’ is authored by Friederike Gütter, Process Expert at the KORSCH INNOVATION CENTER, and highlights the center’s role in adding value for customers.
She points out that KORSCH’s reputation as ‘The Specialist’ in tablet compression does not just rest on the quality of its tablet presses but also requires detailed and in-depth understanding of formulation development and process optimization.
Dedicated research environment
This is the mission for the KORSCH INNOVATION CENTER, as an ideal research environment in which to identify and optimize critical tablet production parameters, and to support customer product formulation projects, which feed back into tablet press expertise.
The INNOVATION CENTER, sited alongside KORSCH’s headquarters in Berlin, is fully equipped with the company’s latest tablet presses, complimentary peripherals, in-process test and related analytical equipment, material handling, and powder processing technology. The Center is staffed by expert scientifics and technical team, including post-doctorate pharmacists, pharmaceutical/chemical engineers and tabletting specialists.
Increased productivity
“In the pharmaceutical industry, a product formulation cannot be changed after regulatory approval, so the KORSCH INNOVATION CENTER can support both pre-approval formulation and post-approval process optimization efforts,” says Friederike Gütter.
“In many cases, there are opportunities for process optimization to facilitate increased output, yield, and product quality, which can offer dramatic returns on investment,” she notes.
While KORSCH is primarily known as a specialist in pharmaceutical tabletting, its distinguished track record extends across a wide range of industries, including the food, confectionery, technical and chemical sectors. Customers in these other areas can similarly leverage the KORSCH INNOVATION CENTER expertise for process optimization services.
Early-stage optimization
For any product, regardless of the market or application, feasibility studies conducted at an early stage of development are critical to defining the optimal process solution that can be scaled effectively.
Working with very small powder quantities on the KORSCH XP 1 Research Tablet Press, and EK 2 Tablet Press for very large tablet formats, the INNOVATION CENTER team can evaluate flow, compressibility, and content uniformity of the product and make formulation and process recommendations to deliver the most robust and reliable production scale solution.
With access to the world’s finest scale-up and high-speed tablet production technology, the KORSCH INNOVATION CENTER can support subsequent scale-up and process optimization efforts.
The Acquisition of the French-based MEDELPHARM has allowed the INNOVATION CENTER to integrate sophisticated STYL’One compaction simulator technology into its equipment portfolio to add important development capabilities in streamlining material characterization and conducting predictive studies on high-speed performance with minimal material quantities.
Partnerships
The long-standing KORSCH partnership with process machinery leader L.B. Bohle has added further expertise around upstream and downstream processes, including granulation, roller compacting, tablet coating, and continuous manufacturing systems.
Additionally, the KORSCH INNOVATION CENTER works closely with the L.B. Bohle Technology Center in Ennigerloh, Germany and the MEDELPHARM Science Lab in Lyon, France, to support product and process development projects. It also conducts joint research projects with technical universities.
“The KORSCH INNOVATION CENTER team plays a critical role in testing and proving new equipment developments and innovative designs from our engineering team – to ensure that concepts are proven in the laboratory under real production conditions. This synergy shortens the development time and ensures a fully developed and tested solution for our customers,” Friederike Gütter points out.
