enGenes Biotech presents continuous plasmid DNA manufacturing at MSS2026 in Bled
Vienna, Austria: – Recombinant proteins and plasmid DNA specialist CDMO enGenes Biotech is heading to Bled, Slovenia, to present peer-reviewed data on continuous plasmid DNA (pDNA) manufacturing at the next-gen bioManufacturing & Delivery Science Symposium (MSS2026), running 14–16 September 2026 as a hybrid, onsite and online event.
Dr Juergen Mairhofer, CEO and co-founder of enGenes, will deliver a presentation in the symposium’s “Nucleic Acids and LNPs” stream, part of the “Next Generation Manufacturing Platforms” session, on Monday 14 September.
A single continuous line, from fermentation to purified plasmid
Dr Mairhofer’s talk, “iCAP: Integrated Continuous and Automated Platform for Plasmid Production”, runs from 16:10 to 17:00 in Hall F. It sets out how enGenes has combined a growth-decoupled E. coli host strain and fermentation process, inline alkaline lysis optimised with a mechanistic model, and monolithic chromatography into a single continuous line, monitored in real time.
Most plasmid DNA is still produced in batch mode, where yields are low and much of the eventual cost of goods is locked in as early as the fermentation step
Part of the dataset was developed with partners Sartorius BIA Separations, BOKU University Vienna, Novasign and Qubicon, and is published open access as Korn et al., Biochemical Engineering Journal 235 (2026) 110345.
Meeting the people who build and buy pDNA processes
Plasmid DNA is the starting material for mRNA vaccines, AAV and lentiviral vectors, and DNA vaccines, and MSS2026 is one of the few European meetings where upstream, downstream and analytical experts for nucleic acids sit in the same room. enGenes is using the symposium to meet mRNA, AAV, lentivirus and DNA vaccine manufacturers who need high-yield pDNA and would rather run the process in-house than continue buying material, as well as to identify potential licensees and partners for its E. coli platforms and buyers for its wider product portfolio and services.
Alongside iCAP, enGenes will discuss its eXpress™ growth-decoupled E. coli expression platform for recombinant proteins, its recombinant Protein A affinity ligands for resin and membrane manufacturers seeking a European supply source, and eXrase™, its recombinant endonuclease for nucleic acid removal in bioprocessing. The iCAP technology itself is offered as a licence package, combining the host strain, process know-how, pre-blended media and support, for companies that want to produce their own plasmid DNA rather than buy it in.
Dr Mairhofer commented: “Yield is what decides the cost of goods, but it’s rarely published by service providers. We think companies should be able to know and run a high-titre process themselves, and that process needs to be transferable into GMP. That’s the case we’re making at MSS2026, backed by data now published in the Biochemical Engineering Journal.”
