Zurich, Switzerland: – Fast-growing pharma CDMO, VIO Chemicals, has joined an EC-supported initiative that aims to revitalize European chemistry and biotechnology research, development and innovation on sustainable lines.

VIO Chemicals has become a member of SusChem Switzerland, the Swiss national arm of the European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem ETP). Founded in 2004, SusChem now extends to 14 different countries across the EU.

As a member of SusChem Switzerland, VIO Chemicals joins major players of the Swiss life sciences sector, such as INEOS, Lonza, CimArk, ETH Zurich and the Swiss Chemical Society (SCS).

Shared vision

“VIO Chemicals shares SusChem Switzerland’s vision for a robust and sustainable Swiss chemical industry,” declared VIO Chemicals CEO & Founder, Dimitris Kalias.

“We see smart specialization, innovative technologies for high performance materials, sustainable industrial processes and controls as key competitiveness drivers for the European chemical industry,” said Mr. Kalias.

“VIO Chemicals already strives to be at the forefront of science and technology by continuous investment in its people and infrastructure, use of advanced process technologies to achieve more flexible, scalable and efficient R&D and manufacturing capabilities, as well as by sustainable use of its resources and waste to minimize our health, energy and environmental impacts,” he added.

Growth strategy

Chemical, pharmaceutical and biotech sectors currently account for 41% of total Swiss exports, with national growth strategy largely driven by emphasis on constant innovation and internationalism.

VIO Chemicals and its fellow SusChem members pledge openness to share expertise and form synergies with national and European stakeholders and promote the use of sustainable chemistry.

As a SusChem member, VIO Chemicals also aims to become more prominent in the debate about the role of the chemical industry as a solutions provider to global societal challenges.

Mr. Kalias commented: “By joining SusChem Switzerland, VIO Chemicals aspires to promote chemical industry priorities up the European policy agenda, join a Europe-wide collaborative network and contribute to a dynamic innovation and industrial eco-system as part of the Europe 2020 strategy for an inclusive European economy.”
