Havets Hus was founded in 1993, initially as a self-management unit of the Lysekil City Council. In 2005, it became a not-for-profit company; Havets Hus in Lysekil AB, which in turn is owned by the municipality of Lysekil. From the start, its core missions have been the rehabilitation and conservation of marine species native to the North Sea and to spread knowledge about marine life and its importance for current and future generations.

It hosts a complex of more than 25 aquariums that have become one of the most popular destinations in the Bohuslän region, attracting some 80,000 visitors a year.

The Havets Hus aquaria offer experiences ranging from the immediate shore line down to the seabed at great depth, providing habitats for a wide range of marine animals, including the previously endangered small spotted red shark and Thornback ray.

Aurena’s Natural source

Natural and uncontaminated seawater from the Havets Hus reserve at Lysekil on Sweden’s West Coast with the North Sea provides an ideal source for Aurena’s range of nasal and ear sprays that use high-purity seawater containing natural marine minerals.

The seawater is carefully collected at a depth of 32 meters from the Gullmar Fjord that also forms the source for the Havets Hus aquaria. Here, salinity is around 30 to 33 parts per thousand with excellent water quality, free of contaminants and with good oxygenation. Fresh seawater is collected through filters upstream of the Havets Hus intake. It is then stored in local tanks before being road tankered to the Aurena seawater purification plant that can hold up to 23,000 liters of salt water at a time.

As an EcoVadis monitored company (Silver rated), Aurena shares an overall commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Its water collaboration with Havets Hus extends back many years and has more recently deepened to include structured financial support and sponsorship.
