Aurena’s climate targets validated under SBTi

Karlstad, Sweden: – As part of its ongoing sustainability drive, spray specialist CDMO Aurena Laboratories has become one of a select minority of companies to have its climate targets validated under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

This marks a further milestone on Aurena’s path towards becoming a zero-carbon company, coming soon after the company’s upgrade to Gold Medal status under the EcoVadis assessment scheme.

Eliminating Scope 1 emissions

The SBTi has reviewed and approved Aurena’s submitted sustainability targets, which include:

• A 100% reduction (elimination) of Scope 1 emissions by 2030
• Maintaining zero Scope 2 emissions
• Reducing Scope 3 emissions from a 2022 baseline

Aurena’s targets were validated using the SBTi’s streamlined target validation route, designed specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Part of a select global group

Validation places Aurena among the approximately 10,000 companies worldwide with SBTi-approved targets. While this represents a very small proportion of total global businesses, its significance lies in the profile of participating companies.

To date, SBTi adoption has been concentrated among large and listed organisations that together account for around 40% of global market capitalization.

A cascading effect across supply chains

Aurena Laboratories CEO Lars Hedman observed that for CDMOs like Aurena that operate in regulated environments, alignment with science-based targets is increasingly becoming a prerequisite for engagement with global pharmaceutical companies.

“The SBTi membership profile confirms that science-based climate action is rapidly becoming standard practice among the world’s leading corporates—collectively representing a substantial share of multinational procurement spend,” said Mr. Hedman,

“This also signals a cascading effect. What began as a voluntary commitment among early adopters is now evolving into standard practice among large pharmaceutical and healthcare companies. These expectations are increasingly shaping requirements across global pharmaceutical supply chains,” he added.
