Sofrigam incorporates Logmore technology to secure cold chain transport of Covid-19 vaccines
Rueil Malmaison, France: – Temperature-controlled logistics and pharmaceutical cold chain packaging specialist Sofrigam S.A. has partnered with Finnish-based data logging specialist Logmore to provide added security for urgent transport of ultra-temperature sensitive COVID-19 vaccines.
Incorporating innovative Logmore datalogging technology into insulated shipping vaccine packaging will allow Sofrigam to offer customers the capability to monitor internal temperature of the payload without opening the packaging to the outside environment.
Unprecedented vaccine challenge
The initiative will help overcome a number of logistic challenges in the unprecedented global rollout of vaccines at speed and huge scale to combat the coronavirus pandemic that has so far taken almost 2.5 million lives around the globe.
“The volume is unprecedented. To achieve global herd immunity, the world needs at least 15 billion doses of vaccines. That would be in an ideal world without any vaccines wasted at all. It’s absolutely crucial to minimize the amount of waste”, points out Erik Lehikoinen, Global Sales Vice President at Logmore.
Dual challenges
One challenge has been to store and transport messenger RNA (mRNA) based vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, etc., that have to be kept frozen at between -20oC and -70oC to retain effectiveness. In practice, this means shipping in dry ice (CO2) that makes accessing the contents impossible in transit.
Another has been securing vaccine shipments from tampering, with authorities in countries ranging from India to the USA reporting that a surprisingly high number of vaccines have been tampered with due to poor cold chain management.
Both problems dictate that vaccine shipments should remain sealed. However this creates a further issue in accessing data to ensure that the cold chain has not been breached at any point in the journey.
Intelligent response
In response to these problems, Sofrigam and Logmore have joined forces to offer the market a new range of intelligent and qualified temperature-controlled packaging for the transport of Covid-19 vaccines that incorporates smart temperature logging.
The integrated Logmore data loggers now fitted to Sofrigam vaccine transport solutions such as Elite Cubic Shippers incorporate calibrated and certified sensors and enable the temperature, humidity, and light inside the carton to be measured from outside with data downloaded to PC or to qualified handheld mobile device via barcode reader or QR access code.
This allows instant access to the complete journey record for the vaccine consignment, including any shocks or openings experienced on the way.
Peace of mind
The data loggers are connected to the Logmore Web cloud platform for access from anywhere in the world.
”Partnering with Logmore is the logical continuation of our promise to our customers and the end user. Our mission is to offer stakeholders within the medical and health sector peace of mind regarding vaccine efficacy while meeting global demands for Covid-19 vaccination initiatives.” commented Laurence Labranque, VP at Sofrigam, who has extensive experience in last-mile cold chain delivery.
