Rotronic HygroClip2 Advanced probes: Evolution meets innovation
Overview
Rotronic, the world-leading Swiss manufacturer of environmental measurement and monitoring products has developed an improved replacement for its flagship HygroClip2 range of humidity and temperature measurement probes.
The HygroClip2 Advanced (HC2A) range of probes, filters and carriers are priced the same as previous HygroClip2 (HC2) models while incorporating a range of improved features and benefits.
The advances incorporate more than 50 years of Rotronic experience as well as 20 years of continuous development of HygroClip instruments, along with three years of specific development and testing focused on ability to measure temperature and humidity with the absolute precision and stability expected of Rotronic products.
When launched in 1999, the HygroClip digital probe was a revolutionary product setting new standards for accuracy, stability, calibration, adjustment and digital integration. The HygroClip2, introduced in 2009, provided radically enhanced digital capabilities with more advanced calibration and adjustment as well as data logging and sensor diagnostics.
The new HCA2 range is designed to complement Rotronic’s other HygroClip solutions, such as the new Low Dew Point range (HC2-LDP) that utilizes NextGen AirChip4000 technology and the new ATEX range (HC2-EX).
Design & Engineering
At the core of the HC2A design is replacement of the previous IN1 sensor with the more robust and sensitive HT-1 that can measures up to 93°C dew point. The HT-1 sensor has been proven in industrial probes for more than a year with proven performance. It allows the HC2A to measure up to 95%rh at 95 °C and to withstand temperatures up to 200°C over durations of up to 100 hours without increased drift.
The improved probe housing incorporates fully potted electronics, further increasing the resilience of the HygroClip2 Advanced in the most demanding applications.
The new range is designed to accept Rotronic’s range of standardized and fully interchangeable filters and carriers, with simplified filter design and options. These ensure sensors are mechanically protected even when changing Polyethylene and Teflon (PTFE) filters.
The HC2A range now incorporates a similar filter and filter carrier system as used on existing industrial probes with improved filter thread design and physical mounting to carrier body. Industrial wire mesh and sintered steel filters are now redesigned as single modules to prevent leaks.
Electrically, the HC2A range uses improved power management and power supply regulation.
The HC2A-S polycarbonate probes are 23mm longer than HC2 equivalent while HC2A-SM stainless steel probes are 2mm shorter.
The new design combines increased space between sensor pins with domed construction to prevent condensation formation around sensor connections.
Features & Benefits
The new HC2A probes provide immediate new options for customers considering fitting Rotronic’s standard HC2-S(3) and HC2-SM probes as well as their Hydrogen Peroxide resistant counterparts the HC2-S(3)-HH and HC2-SM(3)-HH.
In due course, the HC2A range will be widened to include wider industrial applications.
The new range provides a series of identifiable customer benefits:
Electrical compatibility: HC2A and HC2 range devices use the same electronics so are completely compatible in terms of power supply, power consumption, digital and analogue outputs.
Filter compatibility: All HC2A probes (standard and industrial) now use the same range of filters and carriers with the new filter range also completely back compatible with HC2 probes, with no hardware or OEM device changes required.
Robustness: The new sensor connection design eliminates condensation problems while the new thread design of wire mesh and sinter-steel filters plus direct mounting to carrier prevents minor gaps and seepage.
Improved sensing: The HT1 sensor can measure dew point (up to 93°C) while remaining accurate when exposed to higher temperatures over longer periods.
