Gdansk, Poland: – Bacteriophage experts Phage Consultants will exhibit valuable insights in how to keep bioprocesses safely on track at the green technology-focused World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology, BIO 2014, in Philadelphia USA next month.

This will be Phage Consultants sixth consecutive appearance at the BIO Congress. The Polish-based bioreactor contamination experts will be able to make important contributions to this year’s discussions, which will focus on the role of biotechnologies in creating a lower carbon and more sustainable world.

As green chemistry and new bioprocess-based energy sources gain increased attention and market share, Phage Consultants with their expertise in phage risk mitigation have a decisive role to play in key areas of process safety. These include design of processes and facilities, choice of equipment, design of control procedures and standard operating procedures. Together, these can make crucial differences in enabling successful scale-up of processes to make them effective and profitable.

“If biotechnologies are to make a decisive contribution to creating a cleaner, greener world, they will have to master the challenges of scale and the attendant risks of contamination,” commented Dr. Marcin Los, Phage Consultants founder and CEO.

“We owe an enduring debt of gratitude to the BIO World Congress. It was our first appearance at this event back in 2009 that opened our eyes to the transformational possibilities of green chemistry and industrial biotechnology including biofuels, and how we could establish a valuable presence in this field,” said Dr. Los.

“Now we can repay part of that debt by showing how we can save large-scale bioprocesses from phage contamination and design processes for sustainable operation,” said Dr. Los, who warned in a recent academic article that failings in phage detection, largely due to non-validated tests and lack of education, were seriously jeopardizing research and production in fermentation and other bacterial-based processes.

“Philadelphia 2014 will also present us with a great opportunity for us to strengthen relationships with our existing customers as well as meet new potential partners,” he added.

Attendees are invited to Phage Consultants’ Booth 320, where the company’s representatives will be happy to share the latest developments in bacteriophage contamination prevention and control and discuss the benefits and cost-savings that companies can gain by partnering with the company.

Phage Consultants will also offer an exclusive 10 per cent discount to congress’ attendees who request a service during BIO 2014 or within three weeks of the event.

    About Phage Consultants

Bacteriophages (phages) are viruses that infect bacteria. First discovered around 1915, phages play an important role in viral biology, used to elucidate DNA viral reproduction through lytic and lysogenic cycles. They have been used for almost a century as alternatives to antibiotics and can have therapeutic effect against multi-drug-resistant strains of many bacteria.

Based in Poland, Phage Consultants is a contract research and manufacturing organization that specializes in bacteriophage characterization, production, infection and contamination control and assisting companies whose production is based on microbial activities in preventing phage, bacterial, fungal and viral contaminations.

Phage Consultants are specialists in the field of bacteriophage biology with specific expertise on phage activity in bioprocessing. Its team provides unique assistance to pharmaceutical and biotech companies, offering a range of services from personal training to consulting and process optimization in phage growth limitation. The company also advises and assists clients in the development of new production facilities.

    About BIO 2014

The annual World Congress hosted by the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) is the world’s only event solely dedicated to industrial biotechnology and the most recent advancements in the field. The congress attracts business leaders, investors and policy makers in biofuels, bio-based products, renewable chemicals, synthetic biology, food ingredients and biomass from around the world.

BIO 2014 will be staged May 12–15 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, PA. This year, the 11th Congress will focus on green themes, exploring how industrial biotech can build a foundation for environmentally sustainable economic growth, provide energy security, and promote a cleaner environment.

The program will feature an exhibition, plenary and breakout sessions, workshops, Clean Tech Investor Sessions, networking receptions, and the BIO One-on-One Partnering system that last year facilitated 600 meetings.

The 2013 BIO World Congress attracted some 1,200 visitors from 37 countries, while the exhibition featured more than 70 companies and organizations.
