Introduction

Magnesia GmbH has added new ultra-pure Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) DC compounds to extend its MagGran® branded range of granulated products. These new products are optimized for dietary supplements.

Making Calcium carbonate DC available in MagGran® form offers savings in time and manufacturing costs due to the optimized production flow and increased processing speed.

Applications and benefits

The mineral Calcium is well established as contributing to normal blood clotting, energy-yielding metabolism, strong muscle function and to the normal function of digestive enzymes and neurotransmission. Calcium also has a role in the process of cell division and specialization and is essential to healthy bones and teeth.

Calcium carbonate is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as an inert filler for tablets and other pharmaceuticalsand in the food industry as a firming agent in many canned or bottled vegetable products.

It is also used medicinally as a dietary Calcium supplement or gastric antacid or as a phosphate binder for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic renal failure. The compound is an ingredient of toothpaste and has seen a resurgence as a food preservative and color retainer, when used in or with organic fruit and vegetables.

As a food additive, Calcium carbonate designated E170 or INS number 170 is used as an acidity regulator, anticaking agent, stabilizer or color additive. It is approved for usage in the EU, USA and Australia and New Zealand. It is used in some soymilk and almond milk products as a source of dietary Calcium with preliminary findings that it matches the Calcium in cow’s milk for bioavailability.

Calcium carbonate DC characteristics

MagGran®Calcium carbonate DC is processed with careful consideration for granular structure to create constantly apportioned particles suitable for high speed tablet presses and possessing excellent free flowing properties.

Other characteristics include good binding strength for stable tableting with high crush strength, low friability, and improved decay time with excellent dissolving qualities.

Optimal apportioning and consistent stable granular structure also optimizes compressibility and enables nearly dust-free production.

Magnesia can supply Calcium carbonate DC in forms that are bound with starch, PVP, Acaciaor Maltodextrin, with further binders available on request.

Documentation and standards

All MagGran®Calcium carbonatecompounds are produced to HACCP and ISO standards. Supporting documentation is available on request as well, along with official health data from the European Food Standards Agency, EFSA.

Magnesia maintains high service levels to ensure all compounds can be delivered within short lead times.
