Heavy metals water treatment for Bulgarian copper mine
Rossdorf, Germany: – A comprehensive heavy metals wastewater cleaning solution for a copper mine, engineered by water treatment specialist EnviroChemie GmbH, has entered operation in Bulgaria.
The modular water treatment plant at the Ellatzite-Med mining complex successfully completed its 72-hour proving tests in mid-July and has now been officially commissioned into service.
Combined treatments
The plant is required to remove suspended solids and heavy metals from water used in copper ore processing, with the emphasis on efficiency and sustainability.
The EnviroChemie solution is based on combined mechanical and chemical treatment by various EnviModul technology modules, including Envochem® chemical treatment and precipitation of heavy metals, Envochem® heavy metal separation, and an Envochem® combined sludge settling and thickening unit.
This modular concept incorporates four different precipitation reagents to settle sediments in the water into a partially treated sludge, via a lamella clarifier process. This sludge is then fed through to the combined final settling and thickening module.
Protecting natural water resources
The plant is also designed to cope with possible load peaks during heavy rainfall or when the snow melts in the surrounding mountains. Initial operating capacity of 360 m3/h can be doubled to 720 m3/h to meet higher hydraulic loads.
The new treatment plant for mining wastewater ensures better protection of the region’s water resources in line with a long-term strategy to achieve higher standards in environmental protection on the part of Ellatzite-Med’s owners, the Geotechmin Group.
Ellatzite Mining Complex Director Eng. Vasil Shiskov commented: “As a socially responsible company, Ellatzite-Med has already invested in clean environmental projects and will continue to do so. We are first focusing on water management.”
Complete customized solution
Alexander Grigorov, head of the company’s environment and water department, said the new plant would provide highly efficient mechanical and chemical treatment of mine water, boosting the effectiveness of the mine’s two existing wastewater treatment plants, one of them also using EnviroChemie technology.
Dr Maria Natcheva-Schwarz, Managing Director of EnviroChemie Bulgaria, explained that the treatment process was highly customized to meet the conditions at the copper mine.
“Together with the Ellatzite-Med teams, we carried out intensive studies and analyses to determine the best treatment process for the mine water,” said Dr. Natcheva-Schwarz.
