Innovative wastewater treatment for water reuse in industry

Rossdorf, Germany: – Water treatment specialist EnviroChemie GmbH has begun construction of an innovative multi-barrier type of water plant that transforms municipal wastewater into water that can be re-used for industrial purposes.

The plant is being constructed at Nordenham for the North German Oldenburgisch-Ostfriesischer Wasserverband (OOWV) regional water authority. It will produce around 1.1 million cubic meters of non-potable water from purified wastewater every year, making an enormous contribution to protecting local groundwater resources.

The chemicals company KRONOS TITAN GmbH will be a principal customer for the purified water, using around half the plant’s output for its industrial processes.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the first non-potable water plant took place in Nordenham at the end of June, attended by OOWV Managing Director Karsten Specht and Regional Manager Angela Kampe, and KRONOS TITAN plant manager Carsten Büsing.  Also at the ceremony that officially launched the project were Wesermarsch District Administrator Stephan Siefken, Mayor of Nordenham Nils Siemen, and local state parliament member Karin Logemann.

Combined technologies

At the heart of the project will be a modular EnviroChemie water treatment plant provided as a turnkey installation. This uses a multi-barrier approach to treat the cleaned wastewater from the wastewater treatment plant with Envopur ultra-filtration and Envopur reverse osmosis technology, thus delivering better quality non-potable water.

The plant will comprise eight 40-foot technology modules, a delivery point for chemicals, and auxiliary buildings for offices, communal areas and electrical engineering equipment. The water produced for reuse is free from particles and pathogens, softened and largely desalinated.

Model for the future

Completion of the water reuse plant is planned for autumn 2026 and the completed facility will be unique in Germany in terms of its performance.

The project will serve as a model for other industrial and hydrogen production sites. It demonstrates that, with the right water technology, alternative water sources such as purified wastewater, sea water and surface water can be used to produce non-potable water for industrial purposes.
