EnviroChemie begins WaReIp Project trials to improve water use in industrial parks

Rossdorf, Germany: –Advanced water treatment specialist EnviroChemie GmbH (EnviroChemie) is participating in practical trials aimed at optimizing water disposal and reuse in industrial parks.

The trials are part of the WaReIp (Water Reuse in Industrial Parks) research project, funded by the BMBF and examining a range of recently-developed water supply and disposal concepts.

Desalination membranes

EnviroChemie is working on the use of innovative electrically driven membrane processes to desalinate the salt-rich wastewater flows found on industrial sites.

To test two different membrane processes; electrodialysis and membrane capacitive deionisation; WaReIp has constructed a pilot plant to treat wastewater directly in industrial operations. The pilot plant has been in operation at Merck KGaA on the Gernsheim site since September 2019.

Pilot plant

After pretreatment for solids retention, mixed wastewater from the local production processes is desalinated either directly or after aerobic biological treatment with both membrane processes. By adjusting the level of desalination, various qualities of water can be produced that can be utilised for different water reuse purposes. Prior to discharge, the pretreated wastewater from the pilot plant is fed into the existing industrial wastewater treatment plant.

The WaReIp pilot plant was officially opened in October 2019. Apart from Merck and EnviroChemie, project partners include Endress+Hauser and Darmstadt Technical University, which is coordinating the project.
