Brevetti Angela celebrates 45 years of innovation in pharma packaging

Vicenza, Italy: – Leading manufacturers of high technology pharma packaging machinery, Brevetti Angela Srl, is celebrating the 45^th anniversary of its founding. In that time the company has used constant innovation to become one of the world’s most respected providers of aseptic filling solutions for sterile parenteral packaging of pharmaceutical liquids and gels.

The company’s patented SYFPAC® machines use advanced technology to enable high-speed sterile and highly scalable automated production of small volume plastic vials and ampoules, large volume plastic bottles, or prefilled syringes.

Passion for plastics

Engineer Francesco Consolaro had been working in plastic molding for a decade when he decided in 1977 to found his own company Brevetti Angela in Arzignano, in the Province of Vicenza in Veneto, Italy.

Brevetti is the Italian word for ‘patents’ and so the company’s name literally means ‘Angela’s inventions’, in honor of the founder’s wife. As the name suggests, the company has always prided itself on its invention and innovation. From basic plastic moldings (its first patent was for a clothes peg), Brevetti Angela evolved during the 1980s to focus on the pharmaceutical world, designing and patenting technological solutions to meet ever stricter regulations.

Over three generations, the family owned company has managed to maintain its original dedication and passion for innovation, hand in hand with ever-deepening experience and knowledge of the pharmaceutical market.

Pioneering solutions

The outcome was the development in 1989 of Brevetti Angela’s patented SYFPAC® system as an all-in-one solution for the aseptic packaging of liquids.

SYFPAC is an acronym that stands for SYstem for Filling Parenterals Aseptically into Containers. The system was inspired by Mr. Consolaro’s long-established expertise in plastic moldings and packaging. Its Blow-Fill-Seal (BFS) technology allows a plastic container to be created from plastic granules, formed, filled and sealed all within the same machine in one single integrated process.

This was the first and only BFS system developed and produced in Italy, able to process both polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) forms on the same mold.

Building on the international success of SYFPAC®, Brevetti Angela was able in 1999 to launch the world’s first machine to use BFS technology for production of pre-filled syringes.

Brevetti Angela processes and facilities are certified to meet ISO 9001:2015 quality standards with all crucial operations and engineering conducted in-house.

SYFPAC® advantages

The system offers a highly scalable and cost-effective solution for pharmaceutical parenteral packaging with benefits that include freedom from contaminates and particles, greater ease in matching product to ideal primary packaging format, longer product shelf life and easier logistics in supply, transport and storage.

SYFPAC® systems are highly suitable for clean room environments with compact footprint. Not only clean room dimensions are extremely low, there is also no need for ancillary container storage, washing, or container sterilization installations. Further, only class C environment is needed because aseptic process conditions are guaranteed by Grade A sterile air shower inside the machine during the filling and sealing steps. All process media are handled through pre-sterilized pipes, valves and absolute filters to comply with FDA and EU GMP guidelines

Clean In Place (CIP) and Sterilize in Place (SIP) processes are integrated and are automatically performed internally as standard and automated procedures.

SYFPAC® range

The Brevetti Angela SYFPAC portfolio includes four machines particularly applicable to pharma production and packaging:

• SYFPAC® SVP: for the aseptic primary packaging of small volume vials and ampoules up to 20ml for vaccines, injectable, ophthalmic applications, etc., at up to 16,000 units per hour
• SYFPAC® TWIN: double-decker BFS aseptic primary packaging of small volume parenterals at up to 27,000 units per hour, providing up to 60% greater production capacity on the same SVP footprint.
• SYFPAC® LVP: for the aseptic primary packaging of large volume plastic bottles from up to one litre for IV, irrigation, saline and other applications at up to 2,750 units per hour.
• SYFPAC® SECUREJECT®: for manufacturing of prefilled syringes PFS and injection devices using BFS technology at up to 8,400 units per hour.

These machines form the bases for complete packaging lines when combined with MECAS cap assembling and cap sealing units, or with MASEP trimming machine for strips of vials or single units. The system can also be expanded with a MAVAC unit to automatically collect and re-process plastic scrap produced by the SYFPAC® machine into granules ready to be fed back into the process.
