Benzalkonium Chloride, which can be abbreviated BAC, BZK, BAK or BKC, acts either as a preservative or active ingredient. Benzalkonium chloride uses include incorporation in many ophthalmic, nasal, oral and topical drugs and in a variety of solutions, ointments and creams.

Benzalkonium Chloride applications

Benzalkonium chloride is also known as alkyldimethyl­benzylammonium chloride (ADBAC) and is a mixture of alkylbenzyldi­methylammonium chlorides of various even-numbered alkyl chain lengths.  These quaternary ammonium compounds have a wide variety of applications across the life sciences, both as direct therapies and for research and manufacturing uses. For BKC/BZK, these applications include:

• Ophthalmics: Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC) is widely used as an excipient in ophthalmic solutions, in concentrations typically varying from 0.001% up to 0.2%. It protects multidose sterile pharmaceutical products from contamination, both from environmental and corporeal flora.
• Nasal formulations: BKC is one of the most effective preservatives in nasal formulations, helping to preserve against contamination by utilizing only the purest and safest ingredients.
• Topical formulations: BKC’s odorless and colorless purity and ability to mix well in both aqueous and oily phases makes it an ideal antimicrobial ingredient in topical creams.
• Oral or dental formulations: Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC) can be used as an API in lozenges to treat superficial mouth and throat infections, in gels and creams to treat herpes and cold sores infections, and in antiseptic mouth sprays. In dentistry, Quats are also used either as active antiseptics or preservatives, in rinsing fluids and antiseptic fills.
• Wound care & medical devices: The purity of Novo Nordisk Pharmatech’s pharmaceutical grade BKC makes it highly useful in dressings and medical devices that come into contact with organic tissue. Applications include gauzes, wipes, plasters, patches, skin and wound cleansing fluids, catheter disinfection, irrigation solutions, and surgical glues.
• Contraceptive formulations: BKC is scientifically proven to be an effective spermicide and is used in various spermicidal products, such as spermicidal gels, creams, foams and solutions.

• FeF Benzalkonium Chloride Ph.Eur, USP/NF: Benzalkonium Chloride in paste or gel form manufactured according to the cGMP Guideline ICH Q7 for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients and analyzed according to the current European (Ph.Eur.) and the United States (USP/NF) Pharmacopoeias, as well as the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (ChP). The product contains approximately 95% active ingredients and consists of Benzyl (dodecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 65%) and Benzyl (tetradecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 35%).
• FeF Benzalkonium Chloride Ph.Eur., USP/NF, JP: Benzalkonium Chloride in paste or gel form manufactured according to the cGMP Guideline ICH Q7 for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, with multicompendial analyses according to the current European (Ph.Eur.), United States (USP/NF) and Japanese (JP) Pharmacopoeias, as well as ChP.  The product contains approximately 95% active ingredients and consists of Benzyl (dodecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 65%) and Benzyl (tetradecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 35%).
• FeF Benzalkonium Chloride Solution 50% Ph.Eur., USP/NF: Aqueous solution containing approx. 50% active ingredients consisting of Benzyl (dodecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 65%) and Benzyl (tetradecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 35%).
• FeF Benzalkonium Chloride Solution 50% Ph.Eur., USP/NF, JP: As above but with multicompendial analyses that also accords to current Japanese (JP) Pharmacopoeia.
• FeF Benzalkonium Chloride Solution 50% (45/55) Ph.Eur., USP/NF: A custom-designed solution manufactured to specific order containing approx. 50% active ingredients, consisting of Benzyl (dodecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 45%) and Benzyl (tetradecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 55%).
• FeF Benzalkonium Chloride Solution 50% (53/30/15/2) Ph.Eur., USP/NF: A custom-designed solution manufactured to specific order containing approx. 50% active ingredients, consisting of Benzyl (dodecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 53%), Benzyl (tetradecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 30%), Benzyl (hexadecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 15%) and Benzyl (octadecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 2%).
• FeF Benzalkonium Chloride Solution 17% USP/NF: A custom-designed solution containing approximately 17% active ingredients consisting of Benzyl (dodecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 65%) and Benzyl (tetradecyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (approx. 35%).
