New EnviroChemie plant will turn urban wastewater into non-potable water for industry

    November 21st 2023

Advanced water treatment specialist EnviroChemie is creating an innovative plant in Northwest Germany that will meet local industry water needs by recycling urban wastewater.

The plant now being built for the regional Oldenburg and East Friesan water board at Nordenham will take part-clarified water from municipal wastewater treatment farms and turn it into non-potable industral water. The treated water from Nordenham will meet quality standards that match industry needs, as well as being suitable for some agricultural and domestic purposes, such as watering of plants.

Using urban wastewater as an alternative water resource, the new plant will enable connected industrial consumers to cut their consumption of drinking water by 1.1 million litres per year.

    Combined Envopur® processes

The modular plant uses EnviroChemie’s multi-barrier approach to treat the cleaned wastewater from the wastewater treatment plant , combining Envopur® ultra-filtration with the Envopur® reverse osmosis  process. Together, these technologies will deliver high quality non-potable water that is free from particles and pathogens, softened and largely desalinated.

The plant comprises eight 40-foot technology modules, a delivery point for chemicals, and auxiliary buildings for offices, communal areas and electrical engineering equipment. The non-potable water produced EnviroChemie provides the treatment plant as a turnkey development.

The non-potable water will supply major industrial consumers of water at the Nordenham industrial site. Once all approvals and permits have been issued for the plant, construction will start in the summer of 2024, with commissioning scheduled for end-2025.
