EnviroChemie completes advanced Moroccan wastewater treatment solution

    July 26th 2023

Advanced water treatment specialist EnviroChemie has successfully implemented a leading-edge industrial wastewater treatment solution for Moroccan pharmaceutical company Bioresine.

The expansion of Bioresine’s existing wastewater treatment plant uses advanced engineering to overcome challenges and deliver significant savings in operating costs.

    Sustainable solution needed

Bioresine is a Moroccan producer of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), orange extracts and essential oils that depends on water as a vital raw material. Bioresine’s expansion of production capacity meant it also need to expand its wastewater treatment (WWT) throughput.

The company commissioned EnviroChemie to build an auxiliary expand treatment plant to sit alongside the existing water treatment facility that could treat up to 470 m3 wastewater per day to a purity standard that would allow direct discharge back into the adjacent river.

However, there were significant specific challenges involved in the project. The physical space available for the new plant was very limited, requiring clever engineering to fit it all in alongside Bioresine’s existing WWT tanks, Furthermore, the Bioresine effluent industrial wastewater contained very high salt and organic substance content that would place severe strain on components, materials and purification technologies.

    Customized installation

EnviroChemie provided a purpose-designed solution tailored to Bioresine’s specific needs and circumstances. This included use of plant components that are chemically resistant enough to ensure long service life as part of an ultra-efficient process that was also able to be highly compact.

The main features are a rotary filtration sieve to remove most of the particles from the wastewater before it is sent to the main biofiltration butter tank, where it undergoes biological treatment in biomass to eliminate all organic pollutants, in line with EnviroChemie’s patented Biomar® anaerobic reactor wastewater treatment process.

EnviroChemie’s Asic® system was incorporated to allow the Bioresine WWT plant to run largely automated and autonomously, using remote management and monitoring. This automation, accompanied by use of energy-efficient plant components, have enabled energy savings of around 30%, along with significant operating cost reductions and further economic and environmental benefits.

    Water reuse

The new plant solution enables Bioresine to reliably comply with the specifications for direct discharge into the river; it also incorporates sludge dewatering equipment that processes sludge into a nitrogen-rich dry powder that can be used as an organic agricultural fertilizer.

Bioresine CEO Mustafa Ouahdi commented:  “One of the greatest benefits that we achieve with the EnviroChemie wastewater treatment plant is the significant cost reduction compared to the first existing plant. We also benefit from EnviroChemie’s technical staff being available in real time whenever we need support. We are very pleased with the results of the wastewater treatment and wastewater management.”
