Gdansk, Poland: – An Indian biotech company has testified to the effectiveness of Polish-based bacteriophage specialist CRO Phage Consultants (PC) in troubleshooting ‘phage related problems.

The recommendation from the Indian customer accompanies others that PC has received from other parts of the world in helping to protect fermentation and other biotech facilities from incoming bacteriophage contaminations, some of which may originate from CMO supplies.

Significant testimonials

While client confidentiality prevents PC from disclosing full details of its work, its CEO, Dr. Marcin Los, says the testimonials are significant.

“This latest testimonial from India underlines that we are effective in troubleshooting a wide range of ‘phage problems,” said Phage Consultants CEO, Dr. Marcin Los.

“This can extend beyond the protected facility to problems with supplies outsourced to partner CMOs,” Dr. Los explained.

Troubleshooting phage contaminations

“For production facility managers of biopharma and industrial biotech companies, fermentation teams and QA groups, this is explicit reassurance that Phage Consultants can provide effective help in difficult situations during phage outbreak, even, if it is not customer’s facility, which is affected, but affected is the facility of contract manufacturer failing to deliver material in timely manner,” said Dr. Los.

“Typically, our interventions in phage contamination troubleshooting are on behalf of an affected manufacturer. However, it is also often the case that the request for help comes not directly from the facility, but from a customer who needs to accelerate or improve supply of biologicals from an affected CMO ,” he explained.

Protecting biotech facilities

PC has also announced recommendations for work in Australia, where it has done extended work on regular tests of incoming strains, ensuring safety of bacterial production at a hi-tech facility.

At the upcoming Waterside Conference of the International Society for BioProcess Technology (ISBioTech) in Norfolk, Virginia, Dr. Los will speak extensively on strategies to prevent and reverse bacteriophage contamination and rescue affected biotech facilities.

About Phage Consultants

Phage Consultants is a contract research and manufacturing organization that specializes in bacteriophage detection and characterization and production.

Bacteriophages (phages) are viruses that infect bacteria. First discovered around 1915, phages play an important role in viral biology, used to elucidate DNA viral reproduction through lytic and lysogenic cycles. They have been used for almost a century as alternatives to antibiotics and can have therapeutic effect against multi-drug-resistant strains of many bacteria.

Founded in Gdansk, Poland, in 2007, PC have become world leaders in using the power of bacteriophage technology in bioprocess infection and contamination control and assisting companies whose production is based on microbial activities in preventing bacteriophage contamination, along with bacterial, fungal and viral contaminations.

Phage Consultants are also specialists in the field of bacteriophage biology with specific expertise on phage activity in bioprocessing. Its team provides unique assistance to pharmaceutical and biotech companies, offering a range of services from personal training to consulting and process optimization in phage growth limitation. The company also advises and assists clients in the development of new production facilities.
