Scandinavia’s largest pharmaceutical logistics centre goes live

Press Release | PHOENIX group

NOVEMBER 15, 2019

Nomeco, the Danish subsidiary of the PHOENIX group, has opened the largest logistics centre for pharmaceuticals and healthcare products in the Nordic countries. “At around 80 million Euros, it is the largest single investment in the infrastructure of the PHOENIX group. This underlines our position in European pharmaceutical logistics,” said PHOENIX group Board Member Frank Große-Natrop at the opening in Køge, Denmark.

After three years of construction, the healthcare logistics warehouse and distribution centre has been completed and impresses with many superlatives: The 25,000 square metre building is the size of three football fields and has a fully automated warehouse. With a height of 30 meters, it offers space for more than 55,000 pallets. Thanks to the high degree of automation, up to 1,000 pallets can be moved per hour. Based on the order history, algorithms determine the best possible storage location for each product to ensure the highest efficiency in the inbound and outbound processes.

“The central aspects of the construction of our logistics centre were efficiency, quality and security. In an industry where delivery reliability goes hand in hand with patient safety, this is crucial. With the new logistics centre in Køge, we continue to optimise our supply chain and make medicines available to the patients even faster,” said Henrik Kaastrup, Managing Director of Nomeco. Geographically, Denmark and Køge, south of Copenhagen, is the ideal location for short distances to the whole of Northern Europe. In Scandinavia, the PHOENIX group is present with the pharmacy chain Apotek1 in Norway and in Finland, Sweden, and the Baltics with the pharmaceutical wholesaler Tamro. PHOENIX also operates BENU pharmacies in the Baltic States.

In recent years, the pharmaceutical industry has progressively outsourced logistics and distribution services and concentrated on its core business. Nomeco is clearly feeling this demand as the number of clients and the handled volume has significantly increased in recent years. The new distribution centre will make the company an even stronger outsourcing partner for the healthcare industry.

“In developing the concept, we relied on 30 years of experience as the market leader in pharmaceutical logistics. From now on, the logistics centre with its short delivery times will strengthen the supply chain throughout Northern Europe,” Große-Natrop concluded.

Press Release | PHOENIX group

OCTOBER 16, 2019

Mannheim, Germany: –

  • Significant rise in profit compared with same period of previous year
  • PHOENIX agrees purchase of 20 pharmacies in the Netherlands with Thio Pharma Pharmacies
  • Outlook for 2019/20 remains positive

The further expansion of the business has brought more revenue and profit for the PHOENIX group in the first half-year 2019/20 (February to July 2019). The healthcare provider with activities in 27 countries across Europe achieved a revenue increase of 6.1 per cent (31 July 2019) to €13.3 billion. The growth was due in particular to the Eastern Europe region and the acquisition of the Romanian pharmaceutical wholesaler Farmexim and the nationwide pharmacy chain Help Net in July 2018. “As well as increased revenue, the PHOENIX group has also recorded profitable growth,” stated Oliver Windholz, Chief Executive Officer of PHOENIX Pharma SE. EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) grew by 7.3 per cent to €224.6 million. Profit after taxes rose by 16.7 per cent in the first half-year to €96.6 million. Total operating performance, a particularly relevant figure for pharmaceutical wholesale, also increased by 5.3 per cent to €16.9 billion. This key figure comprises revenue and handling for service charge.

Positive outlook for the full year 2019/20

For the full fiscal year 2019/20 (31 January 2020), the PHOENIX group expects to further improve its position in the European markets thanks to organic growth and targeted acquisitions. The company anticipates revenue above the growth level of the European pharmaceutical markets, with increases in almost all markets in which it is active. In terms of EBITDA, the PHOENIX group expects that the 2019/20 level will exceed that of the previous year, 2018/19.

PHOENIX strengthens its activities with Dutch Thio Pharma Pharmacies

In July 2019, the PHOENIX group signed an agreement to acquire 20 pharmacies in the Netherlands with Thio Pharma Pharmacies. The company already operates more than 300 of its own BENU pharmacies in the country. The approval of the relevant antitrust authorities for the purchase of the Thio pharmacy chain with around 300 employees is pending. With the acquisition of Thio Pharma Pharmacies, the PHOENIX group is strengthening its position as the best integrated healthcare provider in the Netherlands and across Europe. “The expanded pharmacy portfolio is in line with our three strategic aspects of ‘depth, breadth, and digitalisation’, which means that the PHOENIX group is aiming to position itself more deeply, with more pharmacies, more broadly, with more services, and sustainably, with digital offerings, in 27 countries,” explained CEO Windholz. He continued: “In the medium term, we will transfer the pharmacies to our corporate brand BENU, which will bring us even closer to our customers and the end consumers in the Netherlands.”

We are also increasing our cooperation with start-ups in this area,” said Oliver Windholz, Chief Executive Officer of PHOENIX Pharma SE. A pilot project in the area of telemedicine was launched in the United Kingdom, in which patients are advised by doctors via online consultations on topics such as travel vaccinations, which they can then receive at the PHOENIX group’s Rowlands pharmacies. In Germany, PHOENIX launched the app “deine Apotheke” (“your pharmacy”), which provides all German pharmacies with a package of digital services designed to support sales. The app consists of two key components: First, it allows end customers to quickly and easily scan in prescriptions, pre-order drugs or health products straight from their pharmacy, and chat directly with the pharmacist. Second, with its exclusive cooperation in the German pharmacy market with PAYBACK, PHOENIX is also providing access to Germany’s most popular loyalty programme.

Press Release | PHOENIX group

JULY 12, 2019

Mannheim, Germany: – Leading European integrated healthcare provider PHOENIX group has released results for financial year 2018/19 showing a ninth successive year of growth, outperforming international pharmaceutical markets.

For the year ending 31 January 2019, PHOENIX total operating performance (revenue plus handled volume) rose to more than €33 billion. This key figure, particularly relevant for pharmaceutical wholesale, was around five per cent above the previous year’s figure and the highest level in the company’s 25-year history.

Revenue grew by 3.6 per cent compared to previous year to around €26 billion, with sales increasing in nearly all markets, despite generally adverse conditions in pharma and healthcare markets across the 27 countries where PHOENIX group is active.

Other highlights of the 2018/19 results included:

  • Improved EBITDA operating result
  • Goodwill impairment in the United Kingdom
  • Entry into the Romanian market
  • Positive outlook for fiscal year 2019/20

Improved EBITDA

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) rose from €468.0 million to €471.1 million. Although the company improved its operating result compared with the previous year despite numerous one-off effects relating to optimisation programmes, the profit for the period fell to €-112.0 million, largely due to impairment losses on goodwill of around €280 million.

In the United Kingdom, the deductions in pharmacy remuneration by legislators resulted in a reduction in future earnings forecasts. PHOENIX has commenced a comprehensive optimisation programme, aimed at improving earnings in the UK in the medium term.

In the Balkan countries, changes in the market environment led to a downturn in medium-term earnings forecasts.

Consolidation

At the same time, equity increased due to an account of a capital contribution of around €335 million to over €2.8 billion. The equity ratio developed better than forecast, rising from 31.7 per cent to 33.5 per cent.

The 2018/19 results consolidate financial statements to include the companies in Romania, with around 2,200 employees, for the first time.

Oliver Windholz, Chief Executive Officer of PHOENIX Pharma SE, commented: “With the acquisition of the pharmaceutical wholesaler Farmexim and the nationwide pharmacy chain Help Net, the PHOENIX group has tapped into a new and attractive market in Romania. These companies strengthen our position as an integrated healthcare provider.”

Depth, breadth and digitalization

“With more than 2,500 pharmacies, we are leading in continental Europe and can offer our customers throughout the region attractive services and professional advice,” said Mr. Windholz.

The total number of pharmacies, which are central to PHOENIX strategy increased by more than 400 compared with the previous year.

“We base our approach on the three aspects of ‘depth, breadth, and digitalisation’, which means that we are aiming to position ourselves more deeply, with more pharmacies, and more broadly, with more services, in 27 countries while, at the same time, becoming more digital,” explained Mr. Windholz.

In doing so, the company intends to get even closer to its end customers.

Europe-wide investments

In fiscal year 2018/19, the PHOENIX group invested around €176 million in the expansion and modernisation of its pharmacy network and distribution centers, in automation technology, and in logistics services for the pharmaceutical industry.

With the ONE project, the company is building the group’s largest distribution and logistics center in the Danish town of Køge at a cost of more than €70 million. The modern high rack warehouse will offer space for around 60,000 pallets.

Digital initiatives

PHOENIX is currently establishing its new digital unit PXG Health Tech, ahead of planned launch in Summer 2019. The aim is to offer customers digital solutions across Europe.

PHOENIX also cooperates with start-ups. In the UK it has launched a pilot project is launched in the area of telemedicine, with online consultations allowing patients to obtain advice from doctors – e.g. on travel vaccinations, which they are then given at Rowlands Pharmacies.

In Germany, PHOENIX has launched the app Deine Apotheke (“your pharmacy”) to provide all German pharmacies with a package of digital services designed to support sales. The app consists of two components, allowing end customers to scan in prescriptions quickly and easily as well as pre-order drugs or health products directly from their pharmacy. Through the cooperation with PAYBACK, PHOENIX is also opening up exclusive access to Germany’s most popular loyalty programme.

Positive outlook for 2019/20

“We are in a good position to continue growing successfully in the future and to expand our market position in Europe,” stressed Oliver Windholz at the presentation of the annual results.

“Our forecast for fiscal year 2019/20 once again anticipates growth above the level of the European pharmaceutical markets. We are expecting an increase in our revenue and earnings thanks to organic and acquisition-related growth as well as improved efficiency,” he concluded.

PHOENIX group Finnish subsidiary Medaffcon pioneers biobank research

PHOENIX group Finnish subsidiary Medaffcon pioneers biobank research

Phoenix Group Logo 150x81

Press Release | PHOENIX group

APRIL 12, 2019

Espoo, Finland: – Medaffcon Oy, the Finnish arm of leading European integrated healthcare provider and pharma wholesaler PHOENIX group, is taking pioneering steps in utilising biobanks for research and real-world evidence (RWE) generation. Biobank research and RWE are increasingly used by the pharmaceutical industry for a broad spectrum of purposes, ranging from preclinical studies accelerating drug development to post-approval studies evaluating the clinical effectiveness of products during everyday clinical practice.

Medaffcon, part of the PHOENIX group, is an ESPOO based company providing medical and health economic expertise. Medaffcon is the leading private-sector RWE provider in Finland and has been conducting biobank research since the establishment of the first biobanks in the country. To date, Medaffcon has carried out dozens of biobank studies in various research settings, promoting patient-centric and effective healthcare.

To showcase the activity and unique research opportunities offered by the Finnish hospital biobanks, Medaffcon has recently, in collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland, assessed the operational status and sample availability in the six regional biobanks. Special emphasis was put to define possibilities of the hospital biobanks to support the needs of international pharma and health technology companies. Outcome of the survey has been compiled in a report format (see Resources).

World-class research opportunities

Setting up a nation-wide biobank infrastructure that supports innovative approaches to study diseases and promote health and wellbeing has been an integral part of Finland’s Health Sector Growth Strategy for Research and Innovation Activities. To date, the Finnish biobank infrastructure consists of ten biobanks along with the legislation that supports the collection of samples and, with a broad consent, use of them for various research purposes.

The report by Medaffcon describes how the six hospital biobanks, that currently store over 11 million diagnostic samples gathered from around three million individuals have created an internationally unique research infrastructure in Finland. Since the establishment of the first Finnish biobanks 2014 onwards, the number of biobank studies have increased at an accelerating pace. By the end of May 2018 there were close to 200 studies initiated that utilize samples and data collections at the Finnish hospital biobanks, including study initiators from both public (62%) and private (38%) sector.

For more information and examples on the vast RWE opportunities provided by the Finnish biobanks to the global pharmaceutical industry, visit Future Care Finland platform (see resources), a website developed and maintained by Medaffcon.

Accelerating progress

In addition to retrospective samples, collected before the Biobank Act took effect, all hospital biobanks are actively gathering new prospective samples from consenting people. By May 2018, close to 80,000 new samples had been collected. Along with the new sample collections, support from the hospital districts and expanding availability of genome information, the pace of initiating new biobank studies is expected to rise quickly over the coming years.

Medaffcon proactively promotes the biobank research opportunities in Finland as detailed in the current issue of the magazine Biobanking in Finland & Personalized Medicine, viewable online (see Resources). While there are several biobanks in Europe, Finnish biobanking landscape stands out due to several unique features. These include Finland’s universal healthcare that provides a ground for unbiased data with excellent population coverage, use of the national id -system that allows linkage of data between different sources, such as national and disease-specific registries, as well as governmental support and legislation that enables the use of health data for research purposes. For these reasons Finland is a forerunner in biobanking activities also internationally.

“We at Medaffcon see that Finnish biobanks offer enormous opportunities for the international pharma industry. We are excited to be part of this development and want to use our expertise in providing innovative solutions that advance healthcare and wellbeing of future patients”.

Press Release | PHOENIX group

MARCH 04, 2019

Mannheim, Germany: – Leading European integrated healthcare provider PHOENIX group has partnered with data provider INSIGHT Health to host the first Healthcare Executive Forum (HCEF) in Deidesheim, Germany.

The HCEF provided the basis for a select group of healthcare leaders to focus on ‘Patient Centricity in the Digital Age’ and the potential for new technology to prove more individual and tailored services for patients.

Improved patient experience

The two-day event on 24th and 25th January took place at an old winery in Deidesheim. Several executives from industry partners were invited by PHOENIX group and INSIGHT Health to hold a series of focused debates on possible future programmes to improve service, individual therapies and patient experience across Europe.

The event kicked off with a wine cellar tour followed by a gala dinner.

In the keynote speech given by Dr Angela Coulter, a UK-based research scientist from Oxford University with focus on patient and public involvement, the diverse opportunities in engaging with patients more directly within the Digital Age were discussed. Dr Coulter is internationally recognised as an influential health policy analyst and researcher in the field of patient centricity.

Future challenges

As part of its All-in-One Services, PHOENIX group already provides individual solutions for client specific needs by leveraging IT and data to improve delivery and end user experience.

Representatives from the PHOENIX group and INSIGHT Health shared their own insights on future challenges with the participants.

“To me, the most important aim was to talk in a very pragmatic way about how to put patient adherence into practice,” said PHOENIX group board member Frank Große-Natrop.

“PHOENIX is offering a lot of services that hinge on this challenge and I am really looking forward to finding solutions on behalf of our patients,” he added.

Innovative digitalised solutions

The PHOENIX group presentation was delivered by Nemanja Janković, Head of Commercial Partnerships Europe and Stefan Jung, Head of Corporate Pharma Services & Sourcing.

Stefan Jung commented: “The challenge for us as healthcare professionals is to come up with innovative solutions for patients and be more proactive in this area using all of our modern digitalisation tools.”

Jan Tangermann, Head Sales & Commercial Excellence at Sandoz was one of those invited to the event. He commented: “I am a strong believer that in our digital environment we need to engage in connecting the dots even better than we are currently doing and drive partnerships. In this complex environment partnerships are crucial, and this event allows us take our partnerships to the next level.”
