The extensive range of PHCbi Incubators feature innovative technologies to deliver outstanding quality in performance, maximise cell culture productivity and provide optimum results and reproducibility.

PHCbi Incubation Technologies

PHCbi IncuSafe incubators achieve higher quality, energy efficiency and avoid the temperature fluctuations that impact the metabolism of cells and affect various parameters including adhesion, protein expression and proliferation. They do this through a combination of technologies that include:

  • Active Background Decontamination: Combines narrow bandwidth, ozone-free ultraviolet light and inCu-saFe copper-enriched stainless steel alloy interior to fight contamination whilst the incubator remains in use. PHCbi’s patented SafeCell UV Lamp plays a pivotal role, with greater ability to eradicate common strains of mycoplasma bacteria than decontamination lamps emitting at visible wavelengths. The UV light located at base of chamber automatically illuminates for specified periods after each incubator door opening to ensure elimination of airborne contaminants entering the chamber as well as any water-borne organisms in the humidity water reservoir.
  • Direct Heat & Air Jacket System: The patented Direct Heat and Air Jacket In IncuSafe incubators ensures reliable temperature control through a combination of high density foam insulation, gentle fan circulation throughout the cabinet and highly direct heating to respond to door openings, provided by three independent microprocessor-controlled heating sources in the chamber top and rear wall, base and in the outer door. All of these techniques combine to maintain uniform temperatures, prevent condensation and avoid ‘cold-spots’.
  • Dual IR Sensor: PHCbi’s single beam, dual detector infrared CO2 sensing system offers unprecedented control accuracy and stability by simultaneously measuring sample and reference wavelengths for continuous auto-zero calibration. The ceramic-based sensor is linked to sophisticated PID microprocessor controller for display of set and actual CO2 levels. The system delivers ultra-fast recovery without overshoot for optimum CO2 control during periods of frequent incubator door openings, with no moving parts and no need to remove sensor during decontamination.
  • Dual Heat Sterilization: Dual heat sterilization in AICD and AICUVD models utilizes the incubator’s two heaters during the 11-hour 180°C sterilization process, during which door is automatically locked, with no need to remove inner parts or recalibrate afterwards. Low heat dissipation means stacked incubators will be unaffected.
  • H2O2 decontamination process: The hydrogen peroxide vapor (HPV) decontamination process permits quick turnaround (< three hours) of the cell culture incubator between processes, even when a complete, validated decontamination is required. The process combines hydrogen peroxide vaporization with ultra-violet lighting.
  • Zirconia O2 Sensor: The maintenance-free zirconia ceramic solid-state sensor has a high degree of precision, a long service life, and does not require fine adjustment. Through accurate determination of the chamber O2 level the microprocessor injects either nitrogen gas or oxygen as required.

PHCbi Incubator Range

The PHCbi range of incubators encompasses 24 products organized in five main product lines:

IncuSafe CO2 Incubators
PHCbi IncuSafe CO2 Incubators offer outstanding quality in performance, maximise cell culture productivity and provide optimum results and reproducibility. They ensure a precisely controlled O2 and CO2 environment for sensitive cell cultures to deliver long-term performance, optimal cell viability and successful experiments with precise control of CO2 concentration and temperature, while remaining easy to operate and maintain.

They are available in a range of sizes on formats, including the 165 liter MCO-170AIC series, the 230 liter MCO-230AIC series, the compact 49 liter MCO-5AC series and the 851 liter MCO-80IC-PE Reach-In Incubator.

All CO2 incubators incorporate IncuSafe germicidal interiors with other features such as UV lighting, IR dual sensors, Touch Screen control and H2O2 decontamination available, depending on model selected.

IncuSafe Multigas Incubators
PHCbi IncuSafe Multigas Incubators offer ultra-precise regulation of oxygen and carbon dioxide, while maintaining superior temperature uniformity, contamination control, and usability. This makes them ideal for culturing cells at physiological oxygen levels to allow them to grow faster, live longer, and experience fewer mutations. These Multigas Incubator are therefore ideally suited for mammalian tissue research applications, cellular therapy, stem cell research, pathophysiological studies and pharmaceutical production processes.

The five model IncuSafe Multigas range shares general forms and overall designs with the CO2 incubator range and are available in two series: the 161 liter MCO-170M, available in three variants with added UV lamp and H2O2 decontamination options, and the compact 49 liter MCO-5M-PE, also available with UV lamp.

MIR Heated Incubators
The two models in the MIR Heated Incubator range offer a choice between 93 liter (MIR-163-PE) and 163 liter capacity (MIR-H263-PE).

Both provide precise and stable incubation environments, with accurate microprocessor timing to control experiments up to 99 hours and 59 minutes. The 8-bit microprocessor controls heat and refrigeration to accuracy of ±0.2°C with programmable functions useful for investigations involving microbiology, plant cell biology and more. The larger model also incorporates Air Jacket System for more precise temperature control within the chamber.

MIR Cooled Incubators
The MIR-range of cooled Incubators combine the function of a heated controlled atmosphere incubation chamber with an additional cooling function that allows them to maintain temperatures of between -10ºC and +60ºC, making them ideal for microorganism culture and preservation and a wide range of research applications. such as environmental studies and testing that require a wider range of temperatures and lighting patterns. These units emphasize ultra-precise microprocessor control with programmable operation functions to vary lighting and temperature patterns and support a range of diversified long term experiments that need to extend overnight and during holidays or where pattern need to be varied changed.

MIR Cooled incubators come in three formats: the 123 liter MIR-154-PE, the 238 liter MIR-254-PE and the 406 liter MIR-554-PE that also features Intelligent LCD Controller, Automatic Setting Temperature Alarm, an independent over-temperature protection device, programmed Memory Back-up Mechanism, automatic return buzzer, key lock and a self-diagnostic Trouble Mon function.

MLR Climatic Test Chambers
PHCbi MLR Climatic Test Champers are designed to meet the needs of botanic, climate research and other scientists who need to model various types of environment with a wide variety of temperatures, humidity and lighting patterns that can be accurately programmed and controlled. for small plants, environmental tests, algae, drosophila, etc.

The microprocessor PID. and refrigeration capacity control minimizes temperature fluctuation, allowing precise experiments while also delivering energy savings. The intuitive graphic LCD control panel allows easy calibration of temperature and humidity. An integral lightweight, high molecular membrane-type humidity sensor delivers exceptionally high accuracy and reproducibility.

The MLR series includes the 294 liter MLR-352-PE and the similar MLR-352H-PE, which also offers humidity control.

IncuSafe Advantages

IncuSafe incubators deliver three key benefits:

  • Precisely regulated environment: IncuSafe Incubators offer accurate, uniform and highly responsive control of conditions within the chamber. Temperature is regulated through three independent heating zones under microprocessor PID control. High quality sensors within the incubators ensure excellent control of CO2 and O2.
  • Active background decontamination: IncuSafe Incubators are designed to actively prevent contamination during cell culture. The unique, copper-enriched stainless steel alloy interior eliminates contamination and mitigates the effect of airborne contaminates that can be introduced through normal use. An optional, isolated, UV lamp decontaminates circulating air and water in the humidifying pan, without harming cultured cells.
  • Versatile sterilization regimes: PHCbi IncuSafe offers users a choice of sterilization methods. For fast turnaround, H2O2 decontamination safely cleans the chamber in less than three hours. Another option is heat sterilization to complement background decontamination. PHCbi’s Dual Heat Sterilization (available in the MCO-170AICD CO2 Incubator) provides an 11-hour, 180°C sterilization process. With extremely low heat dissipation, cell culturing can continue uninterrupted in stacked IncuSafe Incubators during sterilization.

IncuSafe Technologies

IncuSafe Incubators deliver user benefits thanks to a range of distinctive or proprietary technologies:

Direct Heat System: The direct heat system achieves an accurate, uniform, and highly responsive temperature control within the chamber. It regulates temperature through three independent heating zones under microprocessor proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control. This control loop feedback mechanism continuously calculates an error value as the difference between desired setpoint (SP) and measured process variable (PV) and corrects using the three PID terms.

CO2 control by IR Sensor: The infra-red based system offers accurate and reliable CO2 measurement using a ceramic-based sensor that is unaffected by moderate changes in temperature and relative humidity and is linked to the PID controller for fast recovery times.

Dual IR Sensor: The single beam, dual detector IR CO2 sensor simultaneously measures sample and reference wavelengths for continuous auto- zero calibration. It thus provides continuous calibration for unprecedented control, accuracy and stability.

Zirconia O2 Sensor: The unique, solid state Zirconia O2 sensor delivers precise oxygen control. (1-18%; 22-80%), for physiological oxygen levels that simulate in vivo conditions.

InCu-saFe Germicidal Interior: The inCu-saFe copper-enriched stainless steel alloy interior combines the germicidal properties of copper with the corrosion resistance of stainless steel.

SafeCell UV Lamp: The optional, isolated, SafeCell UV lamp decontaminates circulating air and water in the humidifying pan, without harming cultured cells.

H2O2 Decontamination: The unique H2O2 decontamination system delivers fast and validated decontamination. The system uses vaporized H2O2 for a minimum 6 log reduction in major contaminants and full decontamination in under three hours.

Dual Heat Sterilization: Dual heat sterilization utilizes the incubator’s two heaters during the 180°C sterilization process, which takes 11 hours. There is no effect on temperature inside stacked incubators due to low heat dissipation so cell culturing can continue uninterrupted with no need to remove inner parts like the CO2 sensor and UV light, or recalibrate after sterilization. This allows more efficient laboratory routines with less incubator downtime. The dry heat sterilization cycle is controlled through the incubator microprocessor control system. The outer door is locked automatically upon initiation of the sterilization cycle and unlocked upon completion.

The IncuSafe Incubator range

PHCbi IncuSafe incubator cabinets are available in a wide range of sizes and formats, from 50 liter capacity all the way up to 850 liters.

50 litre cabinets

MCO-5AC-PE IncuSafe CO2 Incubator: This compact CO2 Incubator provides an excellent small scale solution for individual cell culture, optimized for patient and/or cell line specific cultures. The copper-enriched stainless steel alloy prevents contamination during cell culture while improved temperature stability with PHCbi’s proprietary DHA (Direct Heat and Air jacket) System and PID-controlled three-way heaters provide a high-precision temperature environment, minimal risk of condensation and shortest recovery times for set parameters. When arranged in triple stackable configurations, this unit meets GLP requirements by helping to avoid patient-to-patient cross contamination in individualized patient-specific clinical incubation applications.

MCO-5M-PE IncuSafe Multigas Incubator: This personal-size compact Multigas Incubator features a similar triple stackable format with variable CO2 and O2 control to simulate in vivo conditions, making it ideally suited to one-donor/one-chamber use to incubate patient cells, in-vitro fertilization, and for dedicated research project use in laboratories. The inCu-saFe germicidal interior and SafeCell UV lamp combine to continuously prevent contamination during cell culturing.

170 litre cabinets

MCO-170AIC Series CO2 Incubators: The IncuSafe MCO-170AIC and MCO-170AICD CO2 Incubators provide precise control of CO2 concentration and accurate, uniform, and highly responsive temperature control within the chamber. During cell culturing the inCu-saFe germicidal interior and SafeCell UV lamp work continuously to prevent contamination. Both feature data logging, LCD touchscreen display and USB connectivity. The MCO-170AIC features optional H2O2 Decontamination while MCO-170AICD features 180C Dual Dry heat sterilization.

MCO-170M IncuSafe Multigas Incubators: The MCO-170M series helps to achieve more accurate results when culturing cells at physiological oxygen levels that provide a highly stable virtual in-vivo environment for highly reproducible cell culturing. Dual IR sensor provides precise regulation of CO2 levels while solid state Zirconia sensor ensures precise regulation of O2. The MCO-170M multi gas incubator is ideal for cell culturing under hypoxic conditions and is therefore ideally suited for mammalian tissue research applications, cellular therapy, stem cell research, pathophysiological studies and pharmaceutical production processes. These incubators are available in -PE standard model, UV (featuring SafeCell ultra-violet lamp) and UVH variant with additional H202 decontamination.

230 litre format

MCO-230AIC IncuSafe CO2 incubator: The IncuSafe MCO-230AIC CO2 incubator incorporates similar features to the MCO-170AIC Series to provide precise control of CO2 concentration and accurate, uniform, and highly responsive temperature control within the chamber, along with inCu-saFe germicidal interior and SafeCell UV lamp work for continuous contamination control. However, the increased 230 litre capacity provides opportunities to use the incubator to scale up from R&D to clinical trials and manufacturing.

850 litre format

MCO-80IC IncuSafe CO2 incubator: This large-scale cell culture CO2 Incubator incubator with its reach-in shelved format is ideal for culturing high volumes of samples with optimum temperature and CO2 uniformity throughout the chamber and rapid recovery after door openings with exceptionally low CO2 gas consumption. The full view, double paned glass door allows easy observation of culture while the door heating system combined with specially designed air flow system prevents condensation throughout the cabinet.

PHCbi Biomedical Preservation Solutions

Secure biomedical preservation of samples, vaccines and drugs in laboratories, clinics and hospitals demands absolute reliability, precise temperature control, energy efficiency and regulatory compliance. PHCEU meets all these demands and more with a range of PHCbi branded Ultra Low Temperature (-150oC) Freezers, Biomedical Freezers, MPR series Pharmaceutical Refrigerators, MBR Blood Bank Refrigerators and Liquid Nitrogen Cryopreservation cabinets.

The PHCbi range of Biomedical Preservation solutions encompasses six main product lines:

Cryogenic ULT Freezers

These systems operate at between -152°C and -86°C for long term storage of sensitive, high value samples. The PHCbi Cryogenic ULT Freezer range includes two products, the MDF-1156-PE with a storage capacity of 128 liters and the MDF-C2156VAN-PE (231 liters). Both incorporate new VIP PLUS insulation and double door gaskets with special foamed-in-place polyurethane insulation material for maximum cabinet protection. They share features such as high performance, quiet-running, advanced controls, high temperature warning systems, LED digital display and flat key data entry for accurate temperature setting, confirmation and operation.

Both employ specially designed cascade refrigeration system to achieve ultra-low temperature of -152ºC, incorporating highly efficient compressors for durable, stable and energy-efficient cooling and liquid nitrogen back-up systems, with the MDF-C2156VAN also using a N2 back-up system and LCD control panel.

TwinGuard ULT Freezers

PHCbi TwinGuard ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers operate at between -70°C and -86°C for safe, long-term storage of biomedical samples and other high-value materials. These solutions are offered in two ranges; the VIP ECO upright format MDF-DU302VX-PE, MDF-DU502VX-PE and MDF-DU702VX-PE and the chest format MDF-DC500VX-PE and MDF-DC700VX-PE.

All are based on VIP PLUS vacuum insulation and TwinGuard dual independent refrigeration systems, combined with optional liquid nitrogen or liquid CO2 back-up system to offer unrivalled sample protection and security.

The upright format range offers multiple shelf configurations for flexible storage options, along with the intelligent interface color LCD touch panel for full user control, even with gloved hands. All TwinGuard ULT freezers incorporate USB port for transfer of logged data to PC.

Biomedical Freezers

Operating between -20°C and -40°C, these freezers are suited for storage of vaccines, enzymes and diagnostic samples, as well as temperature and aging tests. These products include the chest format MDF-137-PE (138 liter storage capacity), MDF-237-PE (221L) and MDF-437-PE (425L) along with the upright format MDF-U731M-PE (690L) and ECO range MDF-MU300H-PE (274L) and MDF-MU500H-PE (482L). The ECO range use natural (HC) refrigerants and inverter compressors to minimize energy consumption, reduce environmental impact and minimize running costs.

MPR Pharmaceutical Refrigerators

PHCbi MPR Pharmaceutical Refrigerators offer uniform storage temperature for demanding pharmaceutical, medicinal, vaccine, and other temperature-sensitive applications in the chilled/cold range at between 2oC and 23oC.

These solutions include 14 products in three ranges:

  • Sliding door glass fronted cabinets: MPR-S163-PE (158L), MPR-S313-PE (340L), MPR-514-PE (489L), MPR-514R-PE (489L with sliding racks) MPR-1014-PE (1033L) and MPR-1014R-PE (1033L with sliding racks), all featuring alarm and safety devices, high efficiency cooling compressors, microprocessor temperature control, fan-assisted air circulation, cycle defrost system, digital temperature display, door open alarm and abnormal temperature alarms.
  • Hinged door glass fronted cabinets: Sharing features such as adjustable shelves, standard alarm and safety features, HFC Refrigerant & CFC-Free Insulation, large fans and Cycle Defrost, this range includes the MPR-721-PE (684L), MPR-722(R) (671L with slide out drawers), MPR-1411-PE (1346L double door) and MPR-1412(R) (1359L with slide out drawers).
  • Fridge-freezer cabinets: This range of four products offers 2℃ to 14℃ Refrigerators combined with freezer cabinets operating at -20℃ to -30℃. It includes the MPR-N450FH-PE (Refrigerator 326L / Freezer 136L), MPR-215F-PE (176L/39L), MPR-414F-PE (349L/82L) and MPR-715F-PE (340L/82L).

MBR Blood Bank Refrigerators

The PHCbi range of MBR Blood Bank refrigerators conform to internationally recognized AABB criteria, with assured stable and reliable temperature control at 4oC, utilizing proprietary PHCbi technology, with high efficiency compressors delivering more rapid cooling and quieter performance. This range comprises the MBR-305GR-PE (302L or 120 bags), the MBR-705GR-PE (622L or 360 bags) and the MBR-1405GR-PE (1301L or 720 bags)

Liquid Nitrogen Cryopreservation

PHCEU biomedical preservation solutions also include a very wide range of Liquid Nitrogen (LN) Cryopreservation products, including Cryosystem LN2 Freezers, Isothermal LN2 Freezers, Lab Tanks, Standard LN2 Freezers, Transport Containers and Vapor Shippers.

These share features like energy efficient cascade cooling, inverter technology, TwinGuard dual cooling and VIP vacuum insulation.

Preservation Device MDD Certification

Many PHCEU products are classified as medical devices for the preservation or cultivation of human cells, tissues and blood components, according to the European Union Medical Device Directive (MDD).

PHC is certified to manufacture blood bank refrigerators, freezers and incubators as Class IIa medical devices, in line with Directives 93/42/EEC and 2007/47/EC.

EU MDD certification also requires PHCEU quality systems to comply with the latest global standards for medical devices according to International Organisation for Standardization ISO 13485.

PHCbi Preservation solutions achieve higher quality, energy efficiency and stable temperature control with a suite of advanced and innovative technological features and engineering including energy-efficient cascade cooling, inverter technology, TwinGuard dual cooling systems, hydrocarbon refrigerants, patented Vacuum Insulation Panel (VIP), Isothermal freezing and full medical device (MDD) validation and certification. These include:

  • Energy efficient cascade cooling system:PHCbi’s new patent pending capillary tube cascade system optimizes efficiency of heat exchange between the high and low stage circuits – crucial to achieving energy savings in ultra-low temperature freezing, while simultaneously reducing load on compressors for increased relaibility and longer service life.
  • Cryopreservation: The storage of living organisms at ultra-low-temperature such that they can be restored to previous living state requires that they be maintained below the glass transition temperature of aqueous solutions (-130°C). This demands -150°C freezers or liquid nitrogen for extended storage times. PHCbi’s dry preservation and Isothermal concepts overcome the problems of cryopreservation in liquid nitrogen at -196°C, with risk of dry ice cross-contamination, or in vapor phase, with consequent loss of storage capacity and risk of steep vertical temperature gradients.
  • Inverter technology: An inverter compressor operates at different speeds depending on ambient temperature or load conditions. This overcomes the disadvantages of conventional reciprocating compressors, where the piston is always working at full speed, wasting energy and increasing mechanical wear and stress. Intelligent control of the inverter compressor optimizes running speed to actual condition, keeping freezer temperature more stable, while ability to run at lower speeds also helps to avoid energy-intensive compressor start-ups.
  • Dual Cooling System (Twinguard ULT): TwinGuard range ULT freezers, with CoolSafe compressors, use two independent refrigeration systems to provide exceptionally stable -86˚C ultra-low temperature environments with greater stability and security. If there is an unexpected failure in one cooling circuit, the other will maintain temperature in the -70˚C range, protecting samples until service can be arranged.
  • Hydrocarbon refrigerants: Natural hydrocarbon refrigerants provide more efficient cooling due to their high latent heat of evaporation. This delivers higher coefficient of performance (COP) – the ratio between cooling provided and electrical energy consumed. This in turn allows smaller compressors to be used for reduced energy consumption. These natural refrigerants are also more environmentally friendly.
  • VIP Vacuum Insulation Panels: PHC was the first company to introduce vacuum insulation panels to ultra-low temperature freezers. Many PHCbi ULT Freezer models incorporate latest generation VIP PLUS vacuum panels for even greater energy efficiency and cooling performance.
  • Water Cooled Option: A water-cooled condenser option is available for some ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers for repositories, hospitals, clinics and medical research facilities equipped with chilled recirculating water/HVAC systems. This option utilizes the cascade refrigeration design and a three phase process in which heat generated from the freezer compartment is transferred to a water circuit using a plate heat exchanger, after which absorbed heat is directed from the freezer into the building system for re-use elsewhere.

PHCbi equipment can be validated with documentary support to comply with GMP, GLP, GCP, 21 CFR Part 11, PAT, ISO and other reevant internatiional regulations and guidelines, as well as to meet all specific customer requirements and applications.

Validation resources

PHCbi products and PHC facilities are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 13485 standards for quality, environmental management and medical devices.

Because key component parts are designed and built in-house by PHC, it can offer precise and in-depth validation resources specific to PHCbi laboratory products.
