The Bag-on-Valve (BoV) and private label products specialist Aurena Laboratories also operates as a Contract Manufacturing Organization (CMO) that works in close co-operation with commercial partners to transform their products and bring them to market.

As a CMO, Aurena has a track record of innovation and access to a wide range of creative solutions and a proven manufacturing process. These can all be leveraged to re-engineer client products, based on advanced and sustainable BoV spray technology.

Bag-on-Valve CMO applications

Aurena’s dedicated bag-on-valve products team has extensive experience in contract manufacturing and product development for the pharma and medical devices industry.

BoV technology can be used to dispense most products that can be delivered by conventional aerosol, as well as some products that are not suitable for traditional aerosol dispensing. These include viscous gels, creams, and ointments, as well as liquids.

BoV is gaining in popularity as an innovative packaging, particularly in applications with sensitive high purity products or where user convenience is a consideration.

BoV is also a flexible solution that can be integrated into the full range of modern packaging formats with a wide choice of can shapes and formats, valve types, caps, etc. The technology and its applications are explained in greater detail in Aurena’s Bag-on-Valve White Paper, now available for download (see Resources below).

Aurena contract manufacturing process

Aurena’s contract manufacturing process follows a five step methodology, illustrated below.

  1. The first step to collaboration is the confidentiality agreement between the CMO and product-owner.
  2. This is followed by the technical consultation and evaluation of technical feasibility.
  3. Following detailed consultation, the parties enter into a contract manufacturing agreement.
  4. The fourth phase focuses on technology transfer in both directions, enabling the important testing and validation phase.
  5. Once all steps above are complete, contract manufacturing can begin, allowing the transformed product to be taken to market.

Aurena carries out its manufacturing and development operations in Karlstad, Sweden, where quality control and regulatory compliance exceed the requirements and expectations of regulatory agencies and customers.

Aurena is quality certified to ISO13485:2012 standards and is inspected and registered with the US FDA as a Drug and Medical Device Establishment. Aurena also meets ESD and EX-standards, offering manufacturing of flammable products.

Products & Services | AURENA LABORATORIES

Bag-on-Valve (BoV) technology provides an advanced solution for sprayable medical products, delivering a clear set of user benefits. These include environmental friendliness, enhanced economy and efficiency, ease of use and greater comfort for end-user.

Aurena Laboratories AB is a specialist in the manufacturing of BoV-based products for the consumer and healthcare markets.

Bag-on-Valve (BoV) applications

Bag-on-valve technology can be used to dispense most products that can be delivered by conventional aerosol, as well as some products that are not suitable for aerosol dispensing. These include viscous gels, creams and ointments, as well as liquids.

BoV is gaining in popularity as an innovative packaging, particularly in applications with sensitive high purity products or where user convenience is a consideration.

Aurena Laboratories uses BoV delivery for its skin and wound care products as well as its high purity saline formulations.

However, a far wider range of BoV applications are possible including:

  • Pharma & Medical Devices: where safety is indispensable
  • Food & Nutrition: to preserve taste and goodness
  • Cosmetics: Easy to use and pleasant on the skin

BoV technology

The core of the Bag-on-Valve system is an aerosol spray valve welded to a sealed poly-laminated aluminum bag. The bag, filled with product, is placed inside a tinplate or aluminum can that is then pressurized with compressed air or nitrogen propellant.

The propellant then exerts pressure on the outside of the bag, ‘squeezing’ product through nozzle in a spray when the valve is actuated.

The key difference with a standard aerosol is that product and propellant remain physically separate.

This technology allows a number of potent benefits in delivery and user convenience:

  • Suitable for both liquid and viscous products
  • Up to 100% product emptying
  • No risk of diluting, adulterating or contaminating product
  • Longer shelf life with less or no preservatives
  • Even and controlled spraying pattern for optimal result
  • No pumping motion needed
  • Can be used at all angles
  • Reduced spray noise
  • Less-chilling product discharge
  • Hygienic and sterilizable
  • Eco-friendly and non-flammable compressed air or nitrogen propellant
  • Fully recyclable

BoV therefore provides a superior form of spray dispensing that is particularly valuable in high quality products.

BoV is also a flexible solution that can be integrated into the full range of modern packaging formats with a wide choice of can shapes and formats, valve types, caps, etc.

Aurena has produced a Bag-on-Valve White Paper that explains the technology in greater detail. including materials selection, filling methods used in manufacture and discussion of potential BoV applications (see Resources below).

Products & Services | AURENA LABORATORIES

Aurena Laboratories AB is a specialist in the development and manufacturing of final medical products using the Bag-on-Valve (BoV) spray technology.

The BoV package offers a number of valuable benefits for healthcare, cosmetics, and food applications. Advantages include environmental friendliness, ease of use and greater comfort for end-user.

Bag-on-Valve features

Bag-on-Valve consists of an aerosol valve welded to a sealed poly-laminated aluminum bag contained inside a tinplate or aluminum can also that also contains compressed air or nitrogen propellant acting on the outside of the bag. Propellant pressure thus ‘squeezes’ the bag, dispensing product through an actuator when the valve is actuated. Unlike a standard aerosol, there is no mixing between the product and propellant.

This technology allows a number of potent benefits in delivery and user convenience:

  • Suitable for both liquid and viscous products
  • Up to 100% product emptying
  • No risk of diluting, adulterating or contaminating the product
  • Longer shelf life with less preservatives
  • Even and controlled spraying pattern for optimal result
  • No pumping motion needed
  • Can be used at all angles
  • Reduced spray noise
  • Less-chilling product discharge
  • Hygienic and sterilizable
  • Eco-friendly and non-flammable compressed air or nitrogen propellant
  • Fully recyclable

BoV, therefore, provides a superior form of spray dispensing that is particularly valuable in high quality and purity products such as saline solution formulations, skin & wound care products, cosmetics and foodstuffs.

The BoV is also flexible and can be used in a wide range of sizes and with a wide choice of can shapes and formats, valve types, caps, etc.

BoV applications

Bag-on-valve technology is gaining in popularity in the cosmetics and healthcare industries, particularly in applications with sensitive products or where user convenience is a consideration.

Essentially, most products that can be packaged in a traditional aerosol spray may be dispensed using BoV, as well as some products that are not suitable for traditional aerosol delivery.

These include the full range of viscous gels, creams, and ointments, as well as liquids.

Aurena Laboratories uses BoV delivery for its medical device classified products like saline/seawater nasal sprays, eye washes, wound washes and more.

However, a far wider range of BoV applications are possible including:

  • Pharma & Medical Devices, where safety is indispensable
  • Food & Nutrition: to preserve taste and goodness
  • Cosmetics: Easy to use and more pleasant on the skin
  • Firefighting: no use of inflammable propellant

Bag-on-Valve, with its near 100% emptying and longer product shelf life also provides a superior solution in any application where sustainability, economy, and efficiency are important factors.

Products & Services | AURENA LABORATORIES

Overview

Since some time, Aurena Laboratories AB has introduced the new Sparkling Saline Nasal Spray product portfolio to brand owners around the world. The products offer a unique, refreshing, and invigorating experience among consumers who use nasal sprays.

Sparkling Saline Nasal Spray is a patent-protected technology platform for carbonated saline-based products that can be leveraged across numerous market segments. The Sparkling Saline Spray is a new generation of saline and seawater nasal sprays that are infused with microbubbles that reaches deep into the nasal passages to help reduce congestion and clear the nose.

Sparkling Saline Nasal Spray Features and Benefits

Developed in partnership with Clover Hill Healthcare of the USA, Sparkling Saline uses natural product technology based on advanced and innovative formulations. The product range, which is available for private labeling, allows premium niche marketing based upon the following benefits:

  • Superior sensory impact and consumer experience
  • Allows for differentiated claims vs. regular saline sprays
  • Advanced technology

This is a unique drug-free nasal rinse with clinically proven ingredients of saline and carbon dioxide (CO2). The patented triple action formula combines saline with the energetic carbonation properties of CO2 to create a revolutionary rinse designed to cleanse, clear congestion and neutralize the effects of inhaled particulates, irritants, and germs.

The available products range is CE-marked as class IIa medical devices and will be applied to consumer products for Allergy, Cold & Cough, Sinus Relief and Daily Nasal Care, where careful formulation with carbon dioxide (CO2) provides a demonstrably better patient experience as well as benefits such as faster and more complete nasal relief.

Features

Carbon Dioxide provides the unique sensory cue for Sparkling Saline. In addition, it enhances the wetting properties of the saline, has disruptive effects on bio-films and thick mucus, and creates a hostile environment for pathogens. In-vitro data supports Sparkling Saline effectiveness in reducing nasal bio-films, a cause of upper respiratory infection, chronic sinusitis, and associated with poor patient outcomes in post-operative recovery.

Sparkling Saline has a lower pH than regular saline, making it more hostile to harmful bacteria and viruses.

Sparkling Saline has superior wetting properties than regular saline due to surface tension changes caused by degassing of carbon dioxide from the saline liquid. Enhanced wetting properties can have a positive effect on mucus thinning as well as clearing of mucus and inhaled debris. In addition, consumers inherently understand that bubbles are intrinsically linked to superior cleansing.

Aurena is responsible for worldwide manufacturing, from its modern FDA-inspected facility in Karlstad, Sweden, where it has opened the world’s first production line for sparkling saline sprays.

Applications

Sparkling Saline can form the basis for a range of ready-developed, market-oriented, CE-Approved products and well-documented products, with short time to market. Aurena Spray Rinse: Saline-based wound cleansing and irrigation for Private Label

Aurena Spray Rinse: Saline-based wound cleansing and irrigation for Private Label

Aurena_150x86

Products & Services | AURENA LABORATORIES

Overview

Aurena Laboratories has developed Spray Rinse as a saline-based wound cleansing and irrigation spray to remove foreign bodies and reduces the number of pathogens in a wound.

Formulating a wound cleansing and irrigation spray in sterile saline solution achieves a similar osmotic concentration as the human body. The isotonic character of this spray solution ensures that pain or discomfort is not induced when administered to the wound.

Features

Aurena Laboratories is a pharmaceutical contract manufacturer of Spray Rinse as a wound cleansing/irrigation spray product range that removes foreign bodies and reduces the number of pathogens in the wound.

The wound cleansing/irrigation spray removes blood, clot and dead tissue, moistening the wound tissue in the process. All this helps to reduce infection in the wound, which is one of the most frequent complications of wound healing. Despite the use of antibiotics and modern sterile techniques, infection accounts for considerable patient morbidity, discomfort and prolonged hospitalization.

Spray Rinse is a safe and effective product based on advanced formulation with bag-on-valve (BoV) aerosol delivery that dispenses pure solution without being mixed with the propellant, which is kept separate in a bag. The BoV technology allows quick and continuous dispensing, with canister held in any position, to facilitate instant and effective wound first aid.

Since the propellant, compressed nitrogen, is not flammable, the spray is classed as a non-flammable aerosol, which offers advantages regarding safety, transportation and storage. Shelf life is three years from production date.

Spray Rinse is ready for private label and store brands.

Benefits

Spray Rinse is a safe and effective product based on advanced formulation and delivery. It is ready for private label marketing as a Bag-on-valve Aerosol, based upon the following therapeutic benefits:

  • Removal of foreign bodies
  • Reduction of pathogen numbers
  • Removal of blood, clot and dead tissue
  • Moistening of tissue
  • Support wound healing

In addition, Spray Rinse delivers a series of user and convenience benefits in that the spray works at any angle, is environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic and can be used with full sterility until the last drop.

Applications

Aurena Spray Rinse is intended for use in cleansing wounds, cuts, scrapes and burns to support wound healing. It has been developed specifically for the private label market, suitable for a variety of market segments within wound and skin care and first aid, including healthcare institutions, community care, occupational safety and over-the-counter (OTC) channels.

Spray Rinse is product approved and registered according to Medical Device Directive (MDD) 93/42/EEC, Class IIa and is manufactured at Aurena’s facilities in Karlstad, Sweden.

As a fully developed, market-oriented, well-documented product supported with regulatory expertise, certificates and scientific evidence, Spray Rinse offers very short time-to-market.

It is available in 50, 100, 125, 200, 250 and 300 ml. cans with individual carton boxes, with or without leaflets, available for can sizes up to 125 ml. Both sticker labels and preprinted cans can be used. Labels can be provided with a tamper seal. Preprinted cans are recommended for quantities of 25,000+ per order.

Aurena_150x86

Products & Services | AURENA LABORATORIES

Overview:

Aurena Laboratories has developed Burn Gel as a water soluble, transparent hydrogel, also containing Aloe vera. The cooling and soothing effect offers first aid treatment and pain relief after excessive exposure to the sun or after heat exposure. The product may also be used to treat radiation-induced dermatitis, such as sunburn, which may be considered a superficial burn. The use is limited to heat, sun and radiation damaged skin (first or superficial second degree burns only.

Burn Gel is a safe and effective product based on advanced formulation and aerosol delivery. It is ready for private label and store brands based upon demonstrable benefits based on clinical research.

Features

Burn Gel’s combination of a careful formulation with bag-on-valve delivery provides a unique innovation that delivers increased comfort for the patient with quick and easy administration.

The formulation is a water-based fluid consisting of CarboxyMethylCellulose (CMC) plus Aloe vera concentrate that forms an aerosol gel that is water soluble and transparent.

Aloe vera has been used since ancient times for wound care. Animal studies have shown that Aloe vera may help the wound healing process, with effects on prostaglandin and bradykinin hydrolyzing enzymes hypothesized to reduce pain and inflammation.

Delivery is based on the Bag-on-Valve (BoV) spray system in which the gel is dispensed without being mixed with the propellant that is kept separate in a bag. The BoV technology allows quick and continuous dispensing, making it a quick and convenient solution when first-aid treatment is needed immediately.

This design is user friendly, allowing use with the canister held in any position, and facilitates burn care. The device provides a gentle pressure and when used in accordance with instructions provides good medical care for the burn.

Contrary to sheet hydrogels the current device does not use adhesives that risk damaging the wound, does not require cutting or other measures to fit to the site of injury and is easier to apply to curved body surfaces.

As an aerosol, Burn Gel can be applied to the burn with no physical contact, forming a transparent dressing that makes it easy to inspect the burn and can be rinsed off with no risk of damaging the wound.

Applications

Aurena Burn Gel has been developed specifically for the private label market, suitable for a variety of market segments within wound and skin care, first aid, occupational safety and over-the-counter (OTC) channels.
