SysGraph – Visualizing Thermal Process Safety

SysGraph is a graphic evaluation tool for thermal analysis and reaction calorimetry that provides precise evaluations for safety inspections at the touch of a button.

The system generates quick, easy and intuitive evaluation methods, returning the data and graphs needed for thermal analysis and safety evaluation of substances or chemical reactions.

Calculations with informative graphics can be performed from an office PC and saved to a central server.

SysGraph provides the base for two additional modules:

    • ThermoGraph – for adiabatic thermal analysis, including temperature rate, Arrhenius plot, TMR and adiabatic increase displays
    • KaloGraph – for comprehensive evaluation of reaction calorimetric data including isothermal heat flow and balance calorimetry with displays of temperature, dosage weight, power of reaction and accumulation

    Functions

SysGraph is the base for all SYSTAG’s new graphic tools for universal processing and data display under server-based systems. The system accepts inputs from QNX, MIDIVIEW and FIX as raw data. DIF/ASCII data can also be processed.

Raw data obtained chronologically are read into a relational databank, so that at a later stage they can always be retrieved and sorted appropriately for all process steps. This provides a powerful basic tool on which additional evaluation modules are based.

SysGraph allows the user to generate an x-y display of the data and display it immediately.

Automatic or manually set scaling allows each y-axis to be scaled individually, superimposed grids and curves to be combined in composite graphics.

To filter out irrelevant data, the system allows the user complete control over the time window displayed, with ability to jump back to the complete curve at any time. The newly generated view can be saved as a specific table in the data bank, providing a new set of values for calculations.

Pure screen displays are stored in Windows Meta File (*.wmf) format to be embedded in any Windows-based documentation.

SysGraph runs on a Pentium or equivalent >200 MHz PC with 32MB RAM.

Apart from providing a user interface with the databank and generating x-y displays as a stand-alone application, SysGraph also serves as the platform for two powerful modules: ThermoGraph and KaloGraph.

    ThermoGraph

ThermoGraph provides thermokinetic analyses of all FlexyTSC applications such as RADEX and SEDEX, in which prognoses of thermal stability of chemical substances or reaction solutions right through to distillation residue all require precise calculation of the kinetics of possible decomposition reactions.

For storage and transportation tests, it can accurately determine the kinetic properties of various substances, such as the SADT (Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature) needed to ensure safe transportation of chemical goods.

The package also generates TMRadia24 as a further indicator of the criticality of processes, based on adiabatic analysis to provide information that is more accurate than conventional measuring methods based on presupposed first order decomposition.

In addition to decomposition energy and onset temperature, ThermoGraph calculates the following indicators from only one adiabatic experiment:

    • SHR (Self-heating rate)
    • TMR (Time to maximum rate)
    • Arrhenius plot
    • Activation energy

All results are automatically corrected with phi and may therefore be directly included in the risk analysis. Base lines can either be defined automatically by the evaluation software or custom created in the graphics interface.

    KaloGraph

The KaloGraph module is available for conventional isothermal reaction calorimetry or can be combined with Calo2310 Pro for heat flow and heat balance evaluations.

It provides the reliable calorimetric calculations of reaction power and heat that are absolutely essential for evaluating the safety of synthesis reactions and which form the basis for all further safety-relevant assessments, such as calculating a scale-up or establishing a runaway scenario.

The module also helps to set up safe processes, including risk analysis evaluation of various influencing factors in order to minimize the thermal risks of a batch or semi-batch reaction.

KaloGraph generates clear plot visualization of relevant results, including:

    • Reaction heat and reaction power
    • Adiabatic temperature increase (MTSR, maximum temperature of synthesis reaction)
    • Accumulation of reaction
    • Heat transfer coefficient

The results mentioned above depend on the type of reaction control and can be determined for the reactor term as well as the reflux condenser.

The module allows the user to recognise quickly and easily the strength of accumulating reaction and assign processes to the correct criticality class.
