Gdansk, Poland: – Specialist CRO Phage Consultants will use its fifth consecutive appearance at the prestige BIO International convention in California to present new insights on how to keep bioprocesses safely on track by combating bacterial and viral bioreactor contamination.

The Polish-based bacteriophage and bioreactor contamination specialists will again be an exhibitor at the world’s leading biotechnology event, which this year is being hosted in San Diego, starting June 23.

Phage Consultants has attended BIO International Congress every year since 2010, reflecting the importance of bacteriophage expertise in biotech research and production.

“Every year at BIO International we have been able to contribute increasingly sophisticated and relevant insights on the topics of contamination control and prevention as well as bioprocess irregularities caused by bacteriophages,” said Phage Consultants founder and CEO, Dr. Marcin Los.

    Bioprocess contamination

“In fact I would say that bioprocess contamination is one of the leading issues for the industry worldwide right now and bacteriophages play a leading part in that,” Dr. Los declared.

He said that as green chemistry and new bioprocess-based food, energy and therapeutic sources gained increased attention and market share, Phage Consultants with their expertise in phage risk mitigation would have a decisive role to play in key areas of process safety. These included design of processes and facilities, choice of equipment, design of control procedures and standard operating procedures that could make decisive differences in enabling successful scale-up of processes.

Dr. Los will lead the Phage Consultants team Booth 926, where they will be able to show latest developments in bacteriophage contamination prevention and phage-based anti-bacterials.

“If biotechnologies are to make a decisive contribution to creating a better world, they will have to master the challenges of scale and attendant risks of contamination,” said Dr. Los.

“BIO International 2014 will also present us with a great opportunity. It is by some margin the biggest event for the world biotechnology industry and therefore the leading place to meet professionals connected with green chemistry, biopharmaceuticals and enzymes produced in the fermentation processes where understanding of the risks and opportunities presented by phages is so important,” he said.

Of course bacteriophages present a problem as a source of contamination. Paradoxically, though, they are also part of the solution. We can provide technologies based on production of phages that act as potent antibacterials in food preservation and reactor purification,” Dr. Los added.

    About Phage Consultants

Bacteriophages (phages) are viruses that infect bacteria. First discovered around 1915, phages play an important role in viral biology, used to elucidate DNA viral reproduction through lytic and lysogenic cycles. They have been used for almost a century as alternatives to antibiotics and can have therapeutic effect against multi-drug-resistant strains of many bacteria.

Based in Poland, Phage Consultants is a contract research and manufacturing organization that specializes in bacteriophage characterization, production, infection and contamination control and assisting companies whose production is based on microbial activities in preventing phage, bacterial, fungal and viral contaminations.

Phage Consultants are specialists in the field of bacteriophage biology with specific expertise on phage activity in bioprocessing. Its team provides unique assistance to pharmaceutical and biotech companies, offering a range of services from personal training to consulting and process optimization in phage growth limitation. The company also advises and assists clients in the development of new production facilities.

    About BIO International

The BIO International Convention is an annual summit hosted by the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO). Representing more than 1,100 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centres and related organizations across the United States and in more than 30 other countries, the convention is the largest global event for the biotechnology industry.

The BIO International Convention helps BIO fulfil its mission to help grow the global biotech industry, with profits returned to the biotechnology industry via support for BIO programs and initiatives.

The first BIO International Convention was held in 1993 and attracted approximately 1,400 attendees. By 2007, attendance had grown to more than 22,000 and the event now attracts more than 400 reporters, representing most of the world’s leading media outlets and journals.

The 2014 Convention will be hosted June 23-26, at the San Diego Convention Centre in California. Keynote speakers include UK entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson and former US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who joins an illustrious list of previous BIO speakers including her husband President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush, Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Michael J. Fox, Sir Elton John, Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, and General Colin Powell.

The Convention also features the BIO Business Forum (One-on-One Partnering), hundreds of sessions covering biotech trends, policy issues and technological innovations, and the world’s largest biotechnology exhibition – the BIO Exhibition.
